Five Observations from Monday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 7/22

Here are some quick notes from Monday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the second practice of training camp on Monday morning as the back-to-back defending Super Bowl champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Monday's practice, and for reference, Sunday's practice report is available by clicking here.

1. Monday's practice was exclusive to Season Ticket Members.

The Chiefs held the first practice (of two) that was exclusive to Season Ticket Members on Monday morning. The event included the annual pancake breakfast prior to practice, which included appearances by Chairman & CEO Clark Hunt and President Mark Donovan, plus a full-team autograph session after drills concluded.

2. Cornerback Joshua Williams headlined a big day for the defense.

A day after the Chiefs' offense tallied numerous highlight-worthy plays throughout Sunday's practice, it was Kansas City's defense that was the story of Monday's session.

That showing included an interception by cornerback Joshua Williams, who recorded a pick during 11-on-11 drills after safety Chamarri Conner – who came charging on a blitz – rushed the throw. It was a great play by Williams, who adjusted his body and jumped the route to haul in the takeaway.

Cornerback D.J. Miller also recorded an interception later in the period off a tipped pass by cornerback Nic Jones. Linebacker Curtis Jacobs nearly had one, too, after getting his hands on a pass that was deflected by fellow linebacker Swayze Bozeman.

Another standout defensive moment of the day was courtesy of cornerback Trent McDuffie, who made a tremendous pass-breakup on a throw deep down the field during 11-on-11 drills. Earlier in the practice, linebacker Drue Tranquill made a noteworthy play when he recorded a forced fumble during a 7-on-7 segment of practice.

Tranquill's forced fumble was one of several punch-outs for the Chiefs' defense on the day, which was something Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke about following practice.

"That was emphasized last night at the meeting because I felt like we didn't get any of those yesterday," Spagnuolo said. "There weren't as many reps yesterday, but I did think that the defense took it up a notch [today]."

Overall, it's all to say that the Chiefs' defense – the No. 2 scoring defense in the NFL last season – turned in a strong practice on Monday.

3. Wide receiver Hollywood Brown made a handful of standout plays.

Brown has been a steady contributor throughout the offseason training program, and Monday's practice was no different. The veteran receiver hauled in a touchdown on the final snap of 7-on-7 drills early in the practice before catching a quick slant over the middle during an 11-on-11 segment. The latter grab, which demonstrated the growing chemistry between Brown and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, led to a sizable run after the catch.

It's worth noting that no "live" contact is permitted during these early camp practices, but still, Brown's playmaking ability – even in these lighter settings – has been evident.

4. The Chiefs made a few roster moves in recent days.

Kansas City brought back a pair of familiar faces over the last few days in tight end Izaiah Gathings (on July 21) and safety Tyree Gillespie (on July 22). In order to make room for each player on the roster, the Chiefs waived tight end Gerrit Prince and safety Trey Dean.

Gathings, who spent time on the Chiefs' practice squad last season, is back with Kansas City after being waived in early May. The 6-foot-4, 222-pound Gathings caught 60 passes for 559 yards and two touchdowns at Middle Tennessee State in 2022.

Gillespie, a University of Missouri product and a former fourth-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021, is also back with the Chiefs after spending time on the practice squad last year. Gillespie has appeared in 14 games during his career, most recently taking the field for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022. Prior to joining the Jaguars, Gillespie logged 150 special teams snaps for Las Vegas in 2021. He was waived by Kansas City in early May, but now with training camp in full swing, Gillespie will have another chance to show what he can do.

5. Here's a look at Monday's injury report.

The only addition to the injury report on Monday was wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who was absent due to an illness. Cornerback Kelvin Joseph also missed Monday's practice for personal reasons.

Additionally, safety Justin Reid (quad) and defensive end BJ Thompson (who suffered a medical emergency last month) remained on the "Non-Football Injury/Illness" list.

Cornerback Jaylen Watson, defensive end Charles Omenihu, defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi and offensive guard Joe Thuney are still on the "Physically Unable to Perform," or "PUP," list and didn't take the field either.

Other than those players, everyone else participated in Monday's practice.

Next up, the Chiefs will take the field on Tuesday for the third practice of training camp. The session will be open to the general public, but even though most days are free to attend, tickets must be reserved online ahead of time.
