The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 17th practice of training camp on Tuesday morning as the back-to-back defending Super Bowl champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.
Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Tuesday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are available below:
July 21 | July 22 | July 23 | July 24 | July 26 | July 27 | July 28 | July 29 | July 31 | August 1 | August 2 | August 4 | August 5 | August 6 | August 7 | August 12
1. The Chiefs worked on a specific red zone situation during Tuesday's practice.
Kansas City took part in a scenario on Tuesday in which the offense had the ball at the opponent's 13-yard line with 29 seconds remaining on the clock while presumably in need of a touchdown. It was a fun situation, and the back-and-forth results didn't disappoint.
The defense won the first two editions of the drill by forcing a turnover on downs both times. Defensive back Nazeeh Johnson was one of the standouts of the period with a pass-breakup in the end zone. The first-team offense got them back, however, when quarterback Patrick Mahomes found rookie tight end Jared Wiley for a touchdown on the first play of their third attempt. Then, just one snap later, Mahomes found Wiley again in the back of the end zone on what seemingly mimicked a two-point conversion attempt.
Mahomes and the first-team offense won the fourth iteration of the drill, too, when Mahomes connected with wide receiver Rashee Rice on a quick slant for a touchdown. Mahomes then found Rice yet again on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt.
As for the second-team, quarterback Carson Wentz found wide receiver Justyn Ross for a touchdown on their first attempt at the drill. Defensive back Chris Roland-Wallace later notched a pass-breakup on fourth down to thwart their second attempt.
2. Wide receiver Nikko Remigio made one of the top plays of the day.
Remigio turned in perhaps the play of the morning when he secured a diving catch near the sideline during 7-on-7 drills. It was a great play by Remigio, who has put together a strong camp for a second year in a row.
Another offensive standout on Tuesday was rookie wide receiver Phillip Brooks, who made an excellent catch during 1-on-1 drills early in practice. The throw even appeared to be deflected by cornerback Joshua Williams, but Brooks stuck with the play and managed to haul in the tipped pass.
Running back Louis Rees-Zammit turned in a noteworthy play, too, when quarterback Chris Oladokun lofted a throw deep down the sideline and into the arms of the former rugby star. It was a great catch by Rees-Zammit, who continues to improve as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.
3. The Chiefs took part in another "long drive drill" on Tuesday.
The "long drive drill" is a staple of Head Coach Andy Reid's training camp curriculum, and while the Chiefs' time in St. Joseph may be winding down, the practices aren't getting any easier.
The "long drive drill" on Tuesday, for example, tasked the first-team offense with 14 consecutive plays beginning at its own 1-yard line. Wide receiver Rashee Rice was one of the standouts of the period with multiple receptions on short crossing patterns over the middle.
Quarterback Carson Wentz and the second-team offense, who were on the field for six consecutive plays as part of the drill, impressed as well. Specifically, Wentz found wide receiver Mecole Hardman for a sizable gain down the sideline on a beautiful, arching throw that Hardman brought in over his shoulder.
Defensively, cornerback Ekow Boye-Doe logged a pass-breakup down the sideline a bit later despite a good throw by Wentz.
4. Wide receiver Justyn Ross had a strong practice.
Ross made his mark throughout Tuesday's session with multiple noteworthy catches.
He caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Carson Wentz as part of the 11-on-11 red zone period discussed above before hauling in a leaping reception over the middle of the field during 7-on-7 drills a bit later.
Perhaps his play of the day, however, took place during the aforementioned "long drive drill," when Ross made a strong catch over a defender on a true jump ball near the sideline.
It's all to say that overall, Ross was one of the standouts of the morning.
5. Here's a look at Tuesday's injury report.
The Chiefs were without wide receiver Hollywood Brown (shoulder), tailback Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ill), wide receiver Jaaron Hayek (shoulder), defensive lineman Chris Jones (shoulder), offensive lineman McKade Mettauer (knee) and safety Bryan Cook (personal reasons) for Tuesday's practice.
As for the players who have yet to practice in St. Joseph, defensive end BJ Thompson (who suffered a medical emergency in June) remains on the "Non-Football Injury/Illness" list while defensive end Charles Omenihu (knee) is still on the "Physically Unable to Perform" list.
Next up, the Chiefs will take the field on Wednesday for the 18th practice of training camp. The practice will be open to the general public, but even though most days are free to attend, tickets must be reserved online ahead of time.
