Five Observations from Tuesday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/6

Here are some quick notes from Tuesday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 14th practice of training camp on Tuesday morning as the back-to-back defending Super Bowl champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Tuesday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are available below:

1. Linebacker Drue Tranquill made one of the defensive plays of the morning.

Tranquill logged perhaps the defensive play of the day during 11-on-11 drills when he knocked the ball free from the intended target on a jump ball near the sideline while in coverage.

Tranquill was rightfully fired up after the play, and following practice, Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke about the veteran linebacker's presence within the Chiefs' scheme.

"He's been terrific. He kind of elevates all of the competition on both sides of the ball," Spagnuolo said. "He loves football, and he loves being out there. We saw glimpses of it last year, but when you're new and it's your first year, you're just trying to feel your way through, but he's been great. I think the guys would tell you that they feed off of him."

2. Cornerback Jaylen Watson had a noteworthy day.

Watson seemed to take a significant step forward in his injury rehab on Tuesday by shedding his gold, "non-contact" jersey for a standard white jersey ahead of practice.

Watson, who was activated from the "Physically Unable to Perform," or "PUP" list on July 31, had previously sported a gold jersey – similar to those worn by quarterbacks – during padded practices. He traded it in for a standard jersey on Tuesday, however, and made sure to turn in some memorable plays, too.

In fact, during a 1-on-1 period in which cornerbacks faced off against wide receivers, Watson made a tremendous, diving interception before celebrating with the crowd soon after. He later recorded a pass-breakup a bit later during the segment as well.

Another defensive player who stood out on Tuesday was cornerback Trent McDuffie, who logged an excellent pass-breakup deep down the field during an 11-on-11 period of practice. McDuffie was on an island covering wide receiver Hollywood Brown, who was sprinting underneath quarterback Patrick Mahomes' throw, but McDuffie managed to knock the ball away as it arrived.

Lastly, cornerback Keith Taylor also made a significant play on Tuesday with an interception during 7-on-7 drills.

3. Wide receiver Hollywood Brown made a tremendous catch during 1-on-1 drills.

Brown turned in one of the plays of the morning on Tuesday when he went up over a defender to make an excellent, one-handed catch during 1-on-1, wide receiver vs. cornerback drills.

It was just another day at the office for Brown, who has made at least one standout play during seemingly every training camp practice.

Another offensive player who put together a productive morning on Tuesday was tight end Noah Gray, who caught a deep pass near the front pylon of the end zone during a 7-on-7 period before hauling in another grab over the middle of the field a bit later.

4. The Chiefs took part in another edition of one of camp's most entertaining battles.

The running backs, tight ends, linebackers and safeties were tested once again in a variety of ways during Tuesday's practice during a back-to-back sequence of drills.

First, the running backs and tight ends took turns in pass-protection against a charging linebacker or safety. This drill inherently provided the defensive player with an advantage due to their running start, tasking the offensive player with a real challenge as they tried to protect the quarterback standing behind them.

Tailback Isiah Pacheco impressed once again during the period, continuing a camp in which the third-year running back has shown significant growth as a pass-protector. A few other players who stood out during the segment were running back Carson Steele and tight end Baylor Cupp.

Next, the advantage reversed as the defensive player was tasked with covering the offensive player on a passing play. Rookie tight end Jared Wiley turned in a noteworthy play during the drill with a great route that shook the covering linebacker. Wiley then completed the play with a catch over the middle. Tight end Travis Kelce also made a memorable catch during the period with a leaping grab over the defender.

Defensively, rookie linebacker Curtis Jacobs recorded an interception during the segment and safety Bryan Cook logged a pass-breakup.

5. Here's a look at Tuesday's injury report.

The Chiefs were without linebacker Nick Bolton (elbow), cornerback Kelvin Joseph (hamstring), wide receiver Jaaron Hayek (shoulder), running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (illness) and defensive tackle Chris Jones (shoulder) for Tuesday's practice.

In some good news, defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, who suffered a season-ending injury to his triceps during last year's postseason, was activated from the "Physically Unable to Perform," or "PUP," list and participated in Tuesday's practice.

As for the players who have yet to practice in St. Joseph, safety Justin Reid (quad) and defensive end BJ Thompson (who suffered a medical emergency in June) remain on the "Non-Football Injury/Illness" list.

Additionally, defensive end Charles Omenihu is still on the "PUP" list and didn't take the field on Tuesday.

Next up, the Chiefs will return to the field on Wednesday for the 15th practice of training camp. Wednesday's practice is exclusive to Season Ticket Members who previously reserved tickets, but the Chiefs will hold four more practices next week that will be open to the general public. Even though most of those days will be free to attend, tickets must be reserved online ahead of time.
