Five Observations from Wednesday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/7

Here are some quick notes from Wednesday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 15th practice of training camp on Wednesday morning as the back-to-back defending Super Bowl champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Wednesday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are available below:

1. Wednesday's practice was exclusive to Season Ticket Members.

The Chiefs held their second practice that was exclusive to Season Ticket Members on Wednesday morning. The experience included a complimentary breakfast along with the opportunity to meet General Manager Brett Veach and President Mark Donovan.

2. Wide receiver Mecole Hardman had a great day.

Hardman was busy on Wednesday morning with multiple receptions deep down the field.

He got things started with an outstanding grab during 11-on-11 drills in which he made an over-the-shoulder catch just inside the front pylon. Hardman brought in the catch despite tight coverage.

He also hauled in a pair of deep catches during 7-on-7 drills as practice progressed before delivering a noteworthy block a bit later. It's all to say that overall, Hardman was one of the standouts of the morning.

Another offensive player who made a handful of significant catches on Wednesday was wide receiver Justyn Ross, who made multiple, physical receptions down the sideline during the 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 periods. Ross hauled in three catches over the course of those two segments, leaping over the defender to make the contested reception on each occurrence.

Quarterback Carson Wentz recorded a standout play as well when he scrambled to his left before firing a pass while on the run toward the back of the end zone, where wide receiver Skyy Moore completed the play with a leaping catch. It was a tremendous throw by Wentz, who zipped the ball around an incoming defender while on the move.

3. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed a behind-the-back pass.

Mahomes is known for pushing the boundaries of what's possible on the football field, and on Wednesday, he showed off a refined version of a behind-the-back pass that made waves during last year's training camp.

The play, which took place during an 11-on-11 period, featured Mahomes rolling to his right before flipping the ball behind his back and into the arms of tailback Isiah Pacheco, who then quickly got upfield for a touchdown.

Pacheco followed up the play by punting the ball in celebration. In a word, it was awesome.

4. Cornerback Trent McDuffie picked off a pass during 7-on-7 drills.

McDuffie hauled in an interception during 7-on-7 drills as part of a segment that teetered back-and-forth between the offense and defense. Cornerback Keith Taylor also tallied a pass-breakup during the period.

Linebacker Drue Tranquil continued his impressive camp as well with another noteworthy day, particularly in the running game.

5. Here's a look at Wednesday's injury report.

The Chiefs were without linebacker Nick Bolton (elbow), cornerback Kelvin Joseph (hamstring), wide receiver Jaaron Hayek (shoulder), defensive tackle Chris Jones (shoulder) and wide receiver Kadarius Toney (back) for Wednesday's practice.

Linebacker Swayze Bozeman also left practice early due to a hyperextended knee.

As for the players who have yet to practice in St. Joseph, safety Justin Reid (quad) and defensive end BJ Thompson (who suffered a medical emergency in June) remain on the "Non-Football Injury/Illness" list.

Additionally, defensive end Charles Omenihu is still on the "PUP" list and also didn't take the field on Wednesday.

Next up, the Chiefs will have a day off from practice on Thursday before traveling to Jacksonville for the preseason opener, which kicks off at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday. As for who will play in the game, Head Coach Andy Reid explained that the plan is for the starters to play the first quarter, the second team to play the second quarter, and so on.

Kansas City will return to the practice field in St. Joseph on Monday for the 16th practice of training camp. The session will be open to the general public, but even though most days are free to attend, tickets must be reserved online ahead of time.
