Pre-Camp Reads: Looking at WR Chris Conley

Over the next few weeks, we will be taking a closer look at players on the Chiefs roster

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Chris Conley begins year two of his National Football League career in 2016 after a successful rookie campaign.

In his first year in the NFL out of the University of Georgia, Conley finished the regular season with 16 receptions for 199 yards receiving and a touchdown. Conley had 6 catches in the playoffs for the Chiefs, including a touchdown in the 30-0 win against the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round.

Conley spent the beginning of this past offseason working in Kansas City with veteran receiver Jeremy Maclin and third-year receiver Albert Wilson.

"I think without question Mac's (Jeremy Maclin's) influence has rubbed off on that entire room on two fronts," quarterback Alex Smith said before offseason workouts broke. "I think one, the attention to detail, how much he thinks about little things, asking questions in installation. And then the route running, all that, the work ethic, how he attacks guys and things like that. Certainly with those guys, with Chris, you've really kind of seen it in him getting confidence in how good he is physically – how big and fast and strong he is, and using that as a tool in really playing big and physical. I certainly have seen steps this offseason to really see him get after guys and use that."

SEASON REVIEW

Conley was used sparingly as a rookie in 2016, and his biggest moments came in two instances that starting wideout Jeremy Maclin could not play.

During Week 7, Maclin was held out of the game due to a concussion, and Conley had 6 receptions for 63 yards receiving and a touchdown for his best game of the season.

"It feels great," Conley said after the game of catching his first career touchdown. "Shaky week last week (Week 6) for me. For the team to come out and for Alex (Smith) to still believe in me and give me those opportunities today speaks volumes of his trust."

In the playoffs, Maclin was injured in the Wild Card Game against the Houston Texans early in the second half. A few minutes after Maclin came out of the game, the Chiefs inserted Conley, who caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Smith on a play Conley had never practiced. The Chiefs went up on the Texans, 20-0, and never looked back.

In the Divisional round, with Maclin limited, Conley once again stepped up, catching 5 passes for 33 yards receiving.

HOW HE FITS

Maclin leads a young and talented wide receiver room that includes the likes of Conley, Albert Wilson, Frankie Hammond, De'Anthony Thomas and rookies Tykreek Hill and Demarcus Robinson, among others.
