The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that Liberty High School Head Coach Chad Frigon has been named the Eric Driskell High School Coach of the Year for the 2024 season. The announcement took place as part of the annual Simone Awards, which were held at Liberty High School on December 10th.
Frigon was this season's Week 10 Coach of the Week honoree (for Missouri) after Liberty High School beat Liberty North High School 13-10 to advance to the Missouri Class 6 District 7 championship game. It was the second time this season that Liberty defeated Liberty North, their long-time rival, and it also ended Liberty North's reign as defending Missouri Class 6 champions. The Jays finished 9-4, earning their first district title since 2005 and advancing to the Class 6 semifinals where they then lost De Smet Jesuit High School.
"I am so honored to be recognized with this award. Being a head coach is hardly a one-man job, there are so many people that have worked to make our program what it is," Frigon said. "I have been lucky to be surrounded by great people. We are so appreciative of what the Chiefs do to promote high school football programs in Kansas City."
Frigon has been at Liberty High School for 30 years – starting as the freshman head coach, then as the assistant varsity coach for 13 years, to his now 14th year as the head varsity coach – and has an overall school record of 87-64.
The announcement marks the finale of the 28th season of the High School Coach of the Week program, a joint initiative of the Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League. This program is designed to recognize and reward Kansas City area high school coaches for superior performance on a weekly basis while honoring individuals who are shaping today's youth and tomorrow's leaders.
