Pre-Camp Reads: Looking at TE Travis Kelce

Over the next few weeks, we will be taking a closer look at players on the Chiefs roster

Travis Kelce is becoming one of the most recognizable young superstars in the league, and it's fair to say over the course of the next year, all NFL fans will know all about the Kansas City Chiefs tight end. He's not afraid to be himself and that's obvious any time he finds the end zone.

Kelce has put together back-to-back seasons of at least 65 receptions, 850 yards and 5 touchdowns, and he was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2015.

While in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl back in January, Kelce signed a lucrative contract extension that will keep him in Kansas City for the foreseeable future.

"I'm living the dream, literally," Kelce said at the time. "I'm just a very thankful person right now. It's hard to bring this back to reality."

Kelce was excited about continuing his career in a city he now calls home.

"I love [Kansas City] just because they've embraced me ever since I got here, and this organization has been every bit of exceptional for me," he added.

Kelce finds himself as one of the focal points for an offense that averaged more than 25 points per game last season and one that ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in that particular category.

Despite that success, Kelce knows this is a new group and expects even more out of it in 2016.

"We're going to unleash it," he explained of the offense at the beginning of offseason workouts. "I'm confident in where our personnel is right now. Where we're headed as a team is awesome and it's exciting. I feel like, offensively, we can definitely improve from last year. We know we belong here and now we know what we're capable of. We know what we're supposed to do and don't be shocked when it happens like it did last year. It's what we work for.

"We know where we're supposed to be at the end of the year and that's playing for a championship."

SEASON REVIEW

Kelce finished last season with 72 receptions for 875 yards and 5 touchdowns, which put him among the best in the NFL at the tight end position.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound athlete also picked up 533 of his yards via after the catch, which ranked seventh best in the league among all players and positions.

After his impressive follow-up performance to a breakout season in 2014, Kelce was honored amongst his peers this past offseason.

The "NFL Top 100" list is a ranking of the best in the NFL as voted on by 700 current players, and as one of a league-high nine Chiefs to make the list this year, Kelce came in at No. 91.

When looking strictly at box scores, the best game of Kelce's season also happened to be the biggest win for the franchise in the past two decades, which was the 30-0 playoff win over the Houston Texans in the AFC Wild Card game.

For the third time in his career, Kelce went over 100 yards receiving in that game against the Texans, finishing with 8 receptions for 128 yards. All three of Kelce's 100-yard games have come on the road.

All the accolades and everything that comes along with a new contract could change a player's perspective, but don't expect that to be the case with Kelce.

"I'm more motivated than ever," Kelce said, "and it has nothing to do with contract. It has everything to do with how everything played out last year. I feel like the accountability just gets higher and higher with the success you have as a team.

"With individual success, it's the accountability—the trustworthiness of making plays and being there when the guys need you to be there to make those plays. I feel like I left a lot on the field last year. It's motivating. It gets you ready to go back and work."

Kelce will lead a tight ends group heading into 2016 that's full of length and athleticism.
