Looking Back: Chiefs Second-Round Draft Picks

A look at the team's second-round draft picks from the last 20 years

As the 2014 NFL Draft draws closer to its start date, running May 8-10th, the Kansas City Chiefs continue working to find the right fits for the upcoming season. On day two of our abbreviated Chiefs draft history series, we take a look at the team's second-round picks, throughout the last 20 years, including stats from the players' first year with the Chiefs.

*2013 NFL DRAFT *

The Chiefs traded their second-round pick (34th overall) to the San Francisco 49ers for QB Alex Smith, who started 15 games for the Chiefs in 2013, completing 308 of 508 passes (60.6%) for 3,313 yards with 23 touchdowns and seven INTs for an 89.1 passer rating. He also added 76 rushes for 431 yards (5.7 avg.) with one touchdown. Alex completed 30 of 46 passes for 378 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions, good for a 119.7 passer rating, and carried the ball eight times for 57 yards (7.1 avg.) in the Chiefs AFC Wild Card Game at Indianapolis (1/4/14).

OL Jeff Allen - 2012 NFL Draft - Second Round (44th overall)

Allen stepped in at left guard for LG Ryan Lilja, who moved to center to fill in for C Rodney Hudson, after he was placed on injured reserve in 2012 and has started at the post since. Allen saw his initial NFL action on special teams vs. Atlanta (9/9/12) and started his first-career contest vs. San Diego (9/30/12).

OL Rodney Hudson - 2011 NFL Draft - Second Round (55th overall)

Hudson played in 16 contests on special teams and six games on offense, with one start at left guard. He made his first-career start vs. Pittsburgh (11/27).

WR Dexter McCluster - 2010 NFL Draft - Second Round (36th overall)

During his rookie season, McCluster played in 11 games (seven starts) on offense and special teams, starting five contests at wide receiver and two at running back. He recorded 21 catches for 209 yards (10.0 avg.) with a TD and 18 carries for 71 yards (3.9 avg.). McCluster returned 13 punts for 202 yards (15.5 avg.), including one for a Chiefs record 94-yard TD, earning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors and Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week accolades.

CB Javier Arenas - 2010 NFL Draft - Second Round (50th overall - obtained from Atlanta in the 2009 TE Tony Gonzalez trade)

In his rookie season, Arenas played in 16 games (two starts) on defense and special teams and also saw action on offense in one contest. He recorded 49 tackles (35 solo), two tackles for loss, three sacks, eight passes defensed and three QB pressures. He also had four special teams tackles and a forced fumble on special teams. He returned 24 kickoffs for 509 yards (21.2 avg.) and 39 punts for 322 yards (8.3 avg.) and had one rushing attempt for five yards.

2009 NFL Draft

The Chiefs traded their second-round draft choice (34th overall) to New England in the 2009 QB Matt Cassel/LB Mike Vrabel trade.

CB Brandon Flowers - 2008 NFL Draft - Second Round (35th overall)

Flowers played in 14 games with 13 starts at right CB and ranked fourth on the squad with 78 tackles (65 solo), including three TFLs. He returned two INTs for 118 yards, including a 91-yard TD and tied for the team lead with 10 passes defensed, while adding one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. Flowers was named to the Pro Football Weekly All-Rookie Team and was one of four rookies in the NFL to record two or more INTs in a single game. The former Virginia Tech star made his first NFL start at New England (9/7), collecting six tackles. He registered his first-two INTs against QB Brett Favre at the N.Y. Jets (10/26), and tallied 118 return yards, including a 91-yard TD, the fifth-longest in Chiefs history. His 118 INT yards were the second-highest single-game total in team history.

DE Turk McBride - 2007 NFL Draft - Second Round (54th overall)

McBride appeared in 16 games in 2007, including one start. He finished his rookie season with 10 tackles, three assists, one sack, three QB hurries and four kickoff returns for 40 yards.

S Bernard Pollard - 2006 NFL Draft - Second Round (54th overall)

Pollard played in 16 games in 2006 and totaled one tackle, one PBU, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one kickoff return.

*2005 NFL Draft *

The Chiefs sent their second-round pick to the Miami Dolphins in the 2005 CB Patrick Surtain trade. Surtain started each of the 15 games he played in, during the 2005 season. He recorded 47 tackles, 10 assists, four INTs, 12 PBUs and one fumble recovery.

DT Junior Siavii - 2004 NFL Draft - Second Round (36th overall)

Siavii played in 12 games, during his rookie season, and finished with eight tackles, one assist and one sack.

TE Kris Wilson - 2004 NFL Draft - Second Round (61st overall)

Wilson played in three games in 2004, before spending three more seasons with the Chiefs, followed later by three seasons in San Diego and one year with the Baltimore Ravens.

LB Kawika Mitchell -2003 NFL Draft - Second Round (47th overall)

Mitchell's rookie season included 12 games (six starts), 14 tackles, three assists, one INT, one PBU, as well as five tackles, one PBU and two QB hurries in the Chiefs playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts.

DT Eddie Freeman -2002 NFL Draft - Second Round (43rd overall)

In 2002, Freeman played in 15 games and recorded 13 tackles, four assists, four sacks and one PBU.

2001 NFL Draft

The Chiefs sent their second-round pick (42nd overall) to St. Louis in compensation for head coach Dick Vermeil.

CB William Bartee - 2000 NFL Draft - Second Round (54th overall)

Bartee played in 16 games, during his rookie season, including three starts. He finished with 23 tackles, four assists, one sack and two PBUs.

RB Mike Cloud -1999 NFL Draft - Second Round (54th overall)

During his rookie campaign, Cloud played in 11 games, totaling 35 carries for 128 yards, three receptions for 25 yards and returned two kickoffs, totaling 28 yards.

1998 NFL Draft

The Chiefs traded their pick  to Oakland in compensation for restricted free agent DT Chester McGlockton, who finished the '98 season with 10 games played (nine starts), 23 tackles, four assists, one sack, one PBU, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

WR Kevin Lockett -1997 NFL Draft - Second Round (47th overall)

During his rookie season, Lockett played in nine games and finished with one reception for 35 yards.

S Reggie Tongue -1996 NFL Draft - Second Round (58th overall)

Tongue played in all 16 games of the '96 season, finishing with four tackles.

1995 NFL Draft

The Chiefs sent their pick to Philadelphia for WR Victor Bailey, who played for the Chiefs in the 1996 season, totaling two games and one reception for 12 yards

RB Donnell Bennett - 1994 NFL Draft - Second Round (58th overall)

During his rookie season, Bennett played in 15 games and totaled 46 carries for 178 yards and two TDs, as well as seven receptions for 53 yards. He added one kickoff return for 12 yards and recorded one fumble recovery.

1993 NFL Draft

The Chiefs used their second-round pick in the 1992 supplemental draft to select DE Darren Mickell, who played one game in his rookie season ('92), finishing with one tackle. Mickell also played in the Chiefs playoff game against San Diego, recording one PBU.
