Looking Back: Chiefs Fifth-Round Draft Picks

Revisiting the team's fifth-round draft choices of the last two decades

The 2014 NFL Draft is just weeks away, beginning with the first round on May 8, rounds two and three on May 9th and rounds four through seven on Saturday, May 10th. As we continue our look back at 20 years of Chiefs draft history, today's focus is on the fifth-round picks by the team, as well as stats from the players' rookie seasons.

A look back at the Chiefs 5th Round drafts picks of the last 20 years.

2013 NFL Draft

DB Sanders Commings - Fifth Round - Pick #1 (134th overall) - Georgia

Sanders sustained a collarbone injury in training camp and spent most of the season on the club's injured reserve list. He appeared in two games and recorded a solo tackle.

2012 NFL Draft

DB De'Quan Menzie - Fifth Round - Pick #11 (146th overall) -Alabama

Menzie was placed on injured reserve (hip injury), during the 2012 season.

2011 NFL Draft

The Chiefs obtained a fifth-round selection (Stanzi) from Tampa Bay in the 2010 DE Alex Magee trade and later received a fifth-round pick from the Detroit Lions, which the Chiefs used to draft LB Gabe Miller.

QB Ricky Stanzi - Fifth Round - Pick #4 (135th overall) - Iowa

Stanzi served as the backup quarterback in six games, during his rookie season.

LB Gabe Miller - Fifth Round - Pick #9 (140th overall) - Oregon State

Miller spent the entire 2011 season on injured reserve, after suffering a leg injury in the preseason.

2010 NFL Draft

The Chiefs obtained a fifth-round selection (Sheffield) from Miami in the 2009 QB Tyler Thigpen trade and received Carolina's fifth-round selection (144th overall) in the 2009 DT Tank Tyler trade.

DB Kendrick Lewis - Fifth Round - Pick #5 (136th overall) - Mississippi

Lewis played in 12 games on defense and special teams, with 10 starts at free safety, recording 47 tackles (25 solo), a tackle for loss, three INTs, nine passes defensed and a forced fumble. He tied for fourth among AFC rookies and tied for fifth among rookies in the NFL with three INTs.

LB Cameron Sheffield- Fifth Round - Pick #11 (142nd overall) - Troy

Sheffield was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury on Sept. 15.

2009 NFL Draft

T Colin Brown - Fifth Round - Pick #3 (139th overall) - Missouri

Brown didn't play for the Chiefs, but later continued his career with the Buffalo Bills.

2008 NFL Draft

CB Brandon Carr - Fifth Round - Pick #5 (140th overall) - Grand Valley State

Carr played in 16 games (16 starts) in 2008, recording 70 tackles, three assists, two INTs, six PBUs, three TFLs and two fumble recoveries.

2007 NFL Draft

The Chiefs obtained St. Louis' third-round selection (Tyler) and fifth-round selection (Smith) in the 2007 WR Dante Hall trade in exchange for Hall and the Chiefs third-round pick (84th overall).

RB Kolby Smith - Fifth Round - Pick #11 (148th overall) - Louisville

Smith played in 16 games in 2007 (six starts), recording 112 carries for 407 yards and two-rushing TDs, as well as 22 receptions for 148 yards.

K Justin Medlock- Fifth Round - Pick #23 (160th overall) - UCLA

Medlock played in one game in 2007 and attempted two field goals, making one; he also recorded two kickoffs.

2006 NFL Draft

CB Marcus Maxey - Fifth Round - Pick #21 (154th overall) - Miami (Fla.)

Maxey played in two games in 2006.

2005 NFL Draft

The Chiefs obtained CB Patrick Surtain and a fifth-round pick (Grigsby) in exchange for their second-round pick (46th overall) and a fifth-round selection (162nd overall). The Chiefs also sent their original fifth-round pick (150th overall) to Tennessee in the 2005 DE Carlos Hall trade and obtained a fifth-round selection (Hodge) in 2004 trade with Detroit. In addition, the team obtained a fifth-round pick (162nd overall) and a sixth-round pick (Long) from Green Bay in 2004 DE R-Kal Truluck trade. Subsequently, the Chiefs sent that fifth-round pick to Miami in the 2005 CB Patrick Surtain trade. 

LB Boomer Grigsby  Fifth Round - Pick #2 (138th overall) - Illinois State

Grigsby played in all 16 games of the 2005 season.

CB Alphonso Hodge Fifth Round - Pick #11 (147th overall) - Miami (Ohio)

Hodge did not play a game in the NFL.

2004 NFL Draft

The Chiefs obtained Detroit's second-round pick (Siavii), fourth-round pick (Parker) and a fifth-round pick in 2005 for the Chiefs first-round pick (30th overall). Kansas City then sent its fifth-round pick (162nd overall) and a third-round pick in 2005 to Philadelphia
in the 2004 T John Welbourn trade.

2003 NFL Draft

T Jordan Black Fifth Round - Pick #18 (153rd overall) - Notre Dame

Black played in all 16 games of the 2004 season, including four starts.

2002 NFL Draft

LB Scott Fujita Fifth Round - Pick #8 (143rd overall) - California

Fujita played in all 16 games (nine starts) of the 2002 season and recorded 50 tackles, five assists, one sack, one PBU and one fumble recovery.

2001 NFL Draft

The Chiefs obtained QB Trent Green and St. Louis' fifth-round pick (Blaylock) in exchange for the Chiefs first-round pick (12th overall).

TE Billy Baber Fifth Round - Pick #10 (141st overall) - Virginia

Baber played in one game, during the 2001 season.

RB Derrick Blaylock - Fifth Round - Pick #19 (150th overall) - Stephen F. Austin State

Blaylock didn't play in 2001, but saw action in 12 games, during the 2002 season.

2000 NFL Draft

RB/KR Dante Hall -Fifth Round - Pick #24 (153rd overall) - Texas A&M

Hall played in five games, during his rookie season and later went on to wow the crowds at Arrowhead Stadium, earning the nicknames "The Human Joystick" and "The X-Factor" with unbelievable special teams returns.

CB Pat Dennis - Fifth Round - (compensatory pick for '99 free agent losses - 162nd overall) - Louisiana-Monroe

Dennis played in 16 games (13 starts) in 2000 and recorded 60 tackles, seven assists, one INT, seven PBUs, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

1999 NFL Draft

The Chiefs traded their fifth-round pick to Chicago in the 1998 RB Bam Morris trade.

1998 NFL Draft

The Chiefs obtained Chicago's fifth-round pick (Williams) in the '97 WR Chris Penn trade and sent their original fifth-round pick (150th overall) to Green Bay in the '97 LB Wayne Simmons trade.

CB Robert Williams - Fifth Round - Pick #5 (128th overall) - North Carolina

Williams played in all 16 games in 1998 (one start) and recorded 14 tackles, three assists, .5 sacks and two PBUs.

1997 NFL Draft

The Chiefs traded their original fifth-round pick to Miami in the '96 K Pete Stoyanovich trade

RB June Henley- Fifth Round - (comp. pick for '96 free agent losses - 163rd overall)

Henley never played for the Chiefs, but later continued his NFL career with the St. Louis Rams.

1996 NFL Draft

WR Joe Horn -Fifth Round - Pick #3 (135th overall) - North Carolina - Itawamba CC MS

Horn played in nine games in 1996, recording one carry for eight yards and two receptions for 30 yards.

1995 NFL Draft

DT Mike Pelton - Fifth Round - Pick #21 (155th overall) - Auburn

Pelton did not play in an NFL game.

LB Jerrott Willard - Fifth Round - (comp. pick for '94 free agent losses - 164th overall)

Willard played one game for the Chiefs, occurring during the 1998 season.

1994 NFL Draft

The Chiefs obtained Minnesota's fifth-round pick (Burton) in '93 RB Barry Word trade. 

CB James Burton - Fifth Round - Pick #30 (164th overall) - Auburn

Burton didn't play in a game for the Chiefs, but later continued his NFL career with the Chicago Bears.

DT Rob Waldrop - 156th overall

Waldrop played in three-career games for the Chiefs in 1994, recording one tackle.

1993 NFL Draft

G/T Lindsay Knapp - 130th overall* *

Knapp played two-career games for the Chiefs, both coming in the 1994 season.
