Five Observations From Training Camp's First Three Days

A roundup of what we learned from the beginning of training camp

1. During the first three days of camp, only rookies, quarterbacks, players recovering from injuries and select veterans participated.

Only 30 players from the Chiefs 90-man roster were in camp from Wednesday to Friday, and you can take a look at the roster here:

Veteran players arrived on Friday afternoon for the first full-team practice Saturday.

2. Alex Smith, Phillip Gaines and Tre Jones did not practice Friday.

Quarterback Alex Smith and cornerback Phillip Gaines were given days off on Friday. Smith and Gaines were given the day as veteran players, while Tre Jones suffered a hamstring injury on Thursday.

The Kansas City Chiefs rookies and quarterbacks get in some more practice time before the veteran players arrive for Training Camp.

3. Phillip Gaines and Mike Williams returned to the field.

Speaking of Gaines, he practiced both Wednesday and Thursday and looked to be in good form.

Gaines tore his left ACL last season during a Week 3 matchup with the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

Now he says he's nearly 100 percent.

"I'm definitely climbing towards that way," he told the media after practice Wednesday. "There's definitely some rust to knock off, but if feels good to be able to come out here and run around with everybody. And it's my first time playing football since the Green Bay game, so this feels good to be able to have the opportunity to play, and I'm going to try to make the most of it."

Similar to Gaines, wide receiver Mike Williams returned to the practice field this week. Williams didn't participate with the team in offseason workouts due to a hamstring injury.

Head coach Andy Reid had an eye-catching quote about Williams on Wednesday.

"If he can stay healthy, this is an offense that he can be very effective in," Reid said. "We'll just see how he does."

4. The Chiefs are in the midst of a very important backup quarterback competition.

072916-Quarterbacks-ia.jpg

The backup quarterback position is one of the most important roles for a professional football team. In 2014, we saw just how important the role could be when Alex Smith lacerated his spleen.

Chase Daniel, who is now a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, had to fill in for Smith in Kansas City's final game, a 19-7 win against the San Diego Chargers.

Had the Chiefs made the postseason that year, Daniel would have played up until the Super Bowl.

The candidates to replaces Daniel are Tyler Bray, Kevin Hogan and Aaron Murray, and you can read more about them here.

5. Training camp opens to the public on Saturday.

The first three days were closed to fans, so just the media could attend.

That changes Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when fans will fill the stands at Missouri Western State University for the team's very first public practice of the season.

You can find more information on the practice here.
