After a 2014 season in which the Kansas City Chiefs defeated both Super Bowl contenders—the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots—but managed to miss the playoffs themselves, the opening week of the 2015 regular season couldn't come soon enough.
2015 marked the third year of the Andy Reid-John Dorsey regime, and both men weren't shy in expressing that it was time to take the next step during training camp.
And there were reasons to feel that way.
For the first time in his career, quarterback Alex Smith would have the exact same offensive scheme for the third season in a row. Safety Eric Berry would be making his miraculous return, and Derrick Johnson and Mike DeVito would be back in the lineup after missing entire seasons with Week 1 Achilles injuries from the previous year.
Knowing their ultimate goal in reaching Super Bowl 50 was more than 20 weeks to the date, the Chiefs traveled down to Houston for their first game of the year.
The long road of the NFL football season had begun.
