d more help Friday, when the team named Tom Melvin as its new tight ends coach.

Melvin joins the Chiefs after spending the past 14 seasons with Andy Reid in Philadelphia, his 11th as tight ends coach. His first three seasons in Philly were spent as the team's offensive assistant/quality control coach.

Melvin's work in developing players is well-documented. He played a vital role in the development of tight end Brent Celek, who has 280 receptions and 20 TDs in six seasons with the Eagles. Celek ranked second on the Eagles with 62 catches in 2011 for 811 yards and five scores.

Coach Melvin is all about the YAC (yards after contact). During Melvin's time with Celek in The City of Brotherly Love, he saw his student top all NFL tight ends with an average of 8.1 yards after contact. Celek turned in one of the finest seasons ever by an Eagles tight end in 2009, with 76 receptions for 971 yards and eight TDs.

Melvin joined the Eagles after working eight years at Occidental College, where he served as the school's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Prior to coaching, in 1983, Melvin was an offensive lineman at San Francisco State University, where his position coach that year was the current head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, Andy Reid.

Melvin began his coaching career at San Francisco State after he graduated, serving as a graduate assistant on the same staff with Reid.

In 1999, he joined his former position coach with the Eagles and the two have been linked ever since.

Fun fact on Coach Melvin, his cousin, Bob Melvin is a former major league catcher and current manager of the Oakland Athletics.
