The weather was perfect. The stage was set and either the Kansas City Chiefs or the Pittsburgh Steelers would walk off the field Saturday night with their first preseason win of 2013. Advantage Kansas City as the Chiefs left Heinz Field with a 26-20 OT win.
It all began when the hometown Steelers won the toss, deferred to the Chiefs, who were forced to punt on their first drive. After a Dustin Colquitt 40-yard punt, the Steelers struck quick with a 49-yard pass from QB Ben Roethlisberger to WR Antonio Brown, however the Chiefs defense stood their ground, forcing the Steelers to settle with a Shaun Suisham 28-yard FG to take an early 3-0 lead.
The Chiefs put together a nice drive on the ensuing possession, but facing a 4th and 1 on their own 21-yard line, the Chiefs gave the rock to RB Jamaal Charles, who was stopped short, turnover on downs.
The Steelers took the ball and used five plays, before QB Ben Roethlisberger found Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer for a 13-yard TD pass. PIT 10 KC 0.
Facing a ten-point deficit, Chiefs QB Alex Smith began the team's next drive from its eight-yard line and three plays later Chiefs P Dustin Colquitt blasted a 60-yard punt. The Steelers took over possession and ended the quarter with the 10-point lead.
With the lead and momentum, a chop-block penalty was called on Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer, pushing Pittsburgh back on a third-and-long situation, when Chiefs DB Husain Abdullah came through with a textbook tackle, forcing a punt.
The Chiefs next drive led to a Dustin Colquitt punt.
Pittsburgh was threatening on its next drive, but after a ruled incompletion negated a Ben Roethlisberger TD pass to Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders, the home team hoped for a field goal. Looking to add to his team's 10-0 lead, Steelers K Shaun Suisham lined up for a 52-yard FG attempt, but Chiefs DB Tysyn Hartman had other ideas, using his gloved hands to swat the pigskin in a different direction.
Trailing 10-0, the Chiefs used Alex Smith's legs and Ryan Succop's foot on the ensuing drive to narrow the Steelers lead. Smith ran for 38 yards, before being hit late out of bounds, giving the Chiefs a first and goal. Kansas City was unable to find pay dirt, later calling on Succop to drill a 19-yard FG. PIT 10 KC 3.
The Steelers got the ball back late in the second quarter, when Chiefs DBs Tysyn Hartman and Eric Berry dropped Ben Roethlisberger for an eight-yard loss. Later, facing a 3rd and 13, Steelers RB Felix Jones was forced out of bounds by Eric Berry and Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson, leading to a Steelers punt.
The Chiefs took over on their own 28-yard line with 1:18 left in the second quarter. Alex Smith literally needed sixty seconds to lead the Chiefs offense to the end zone.
Smith led the eight-play, 72-yard scoring drive that took one minute, ending with a five-yard TD pass into the hands of Chiefs WR Junior Hemingway. PIT 10 KC 10.
The score remained the same into the third quarter, when both teams turned to their back-up QBs, Bruce Gradkowski for the Steelers and Chase Daniel for the Chiefs.
No scoring took place until later in the third quarter, when Gradkowski hit Steelers WR Markus Wheaton for a 34-yard TD pass. PIT 17 KC 10.
On the very next kick, the Dave Toub-Kevin O'Dea special teams factor for the Chiefs was once again showcased. Chiefs rookie RB Knile Davis took the ensuing kickoff from nine yards deep in his end zone and didn't stop until he covered 109 yards for the score, silencing the Steelers fans. KC 17 PIT 17.
The score remained the same into the fourth quarter, when the Steelers put together a 13-play, 68-yard drive using 5:35 off the clock, when Steelers K Shaun Suisham made a 27-yard FG. PIT 20 KC 17.
The Chiefs began their next drive from their own eight-yard line, with Chase Daniel under center and were unable to score, despite moving the rock, later turning the ball over on downs.
The Chiefs regained control of the ball as Chase Daniel led a late-game drive, resulting in a 38-yard field goal from Succop with 3:19 remaining. KC 20 PIT 20.
The score remained the same into the extra session.
After winning the toss in overtime, the Chiefs drove the length of the field, resulting in a game-winning 15-yard TD pass from Chase Daniel to Rico Richardson. KC 26 PIT 20.
The Chiefs later boarded their plane for the victorious flight home to Kansas City, where they'll close out the preseason against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday.
