The Kansas City Chiefs stormed through the doors of the 2013 free agency season, trading for San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith, who the team will introduce at a press conference, today at 5:00 p.m. CST.
Already owning the rights to this year's top draft pick, the Chiefs add a former No. 1 overall pick, Smith, whose name was called first by the San Francisco 49ers, during the 2005 NFL Draft.
In return for Smith, the 49ers receive our second-round pick (34th overall) in this year's NFL Draft, as well as a conditional pick in 2014.
"After many discussions with the 49ers and Alex, we were able to come to an agreement that we felt was mutually beneficial," said Chiefs general manager John Dorsey.
"Alex wanted to be a member of the Chiefs; we are excited to have him and we think he can help improve this team."
Known for his remarkable ability to bring the very best out of quarterbacks, such as Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid can't wait to work with his new signal caller.
"Alex is going to fit in well here in Kansas City, and we are excited to have him on board," coach Reid said.
"We've seen him play at a high level and he can be very impressive. We are anxious to get him in the building and get him started learning our system."
Both John Dorsey and Andy Reid have been very clear about why they accepted their jobs in Kansas City, to make the Chiefs better, each and every day, en route to the ultimate goal, hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
The Chiefs are a better football team today and perhaps nobody is more excited than its newest member.

Smith (6-4, 217) joins the Chiefs after seven seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, including 75 starts in 80 games, a 59.3% completion percentage, covering 14,280 yards, with 81 TDs and 63 INTs (79.1 passer rating).
Smith has postseason experience, starting two playoff contests in his career, both following the 2011 season, when he led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. His playoff numbers include completing 36 of 68 passes for 495 yards, with five TDs and no picks.
In 2012, he started 10 regular season games for San Francisco, helping the club reach Super Bowl XLVII. Prior to being sidelined with a Week 10 injury against the St. Louis Rams, Smith threw for 1,737 yards, with 13 TDs and 5 INTs (104.1 passer rating).
Smith's best statistical season came in 2011, when he threw for 3,144 yards on 273 completions, with 17 TDs and five INTs.
The La Mesa, California native was an All-America QB at the University of Utah and prepped at Helix High School in La Mesa, CA.
