Alex Smith: Clinching a playoff spot is 'special'

The team's QB describes Sunday's 56-31 win

On his perfect passer rating (158.3):

"The stats, yeah, it's my teammates making me look good. I didn't do much; I mean, three screens for TDs, I've never been a part of anything like that or seen that, pretty special, those guys making me look good."

Why did the screens work so well?

"They (Raiders) are such a big-pressure team, such high volume on their defense; they got away with it the first game, when we were at home, a few times. I thought we had a great plan. I thought coach called a great game, put us in a really good situations. Jamaal [Charles], the line did a great job, those guys downfield blocked really well. Anytime you have long plays like that, there are guys down field blocking."

On clinching the playoffs:

"We knew we controlled our own destiny and coming here and getting a win, that's all that mattered for us. Anytime you can clinch a playoff spot, it's special. Obviously, there's still some left to go here, in the division, but yeah, it's special. It's what you're playing for, it's what you worked for all offseason to get to the postseason."

When did you think making the playoffs was a realistic goal?

"I think earlier in the season, when we put a few wins together, I knew the type of situation we were in, if we could get some wins, get some confidence and get some momentum going, in this league, those are powerful things. There's just so much parity, across the league, that if you can get that going, those are powerful things and once that started, I think that's when we kind of realized it (that it could be a special year)."

On the keys to offensive success:

"I think guys executing; coach put us in great situations, some great timing on some calls and then, I think all 11 executed. Really, that's what it comes down to; nothing special, no magic, just 11 guys went out there and executed and played good football."
