A Historical Look at the Chiefs' Third-Round Draft Picks

Exploring how successful the Chiefs have been in the third round of the NFL Draft over the years

In 1967, a system called the "common draft" was implemented for the AFL and NFL. In this system, the two leagues held a joint draft for college players. The "common draft" existed until 1969 as the AFL and NFL would officially merge in 1970.

Here are some interesting facts about players the Chiefs have drafted in the third round:

  • Nine different players have combined for 31 Pro Bowl appearances, led by Will Shields (12).
  • Five players have combined for eight First-Team All-Pro Awards, led by Jamaal Charles, Will Shields and Albert Lewis (2).
  • There are currently six players drafted by the Chiefs in the third round on the roster, with the eldest statesman being punter Dustin Colquitt (2005-No. 99 overall pick).
  • The most popular position drafted is defensive back (11), followed by defensive line (10), receiver (8), linebacker (7) and tight end (6).
  • 23 of the 55 players played in at least 50 career games, with Travis Kelce one game away from reaching this plateau.
