In 1967, a system called the "common draft" was implemented for the AFL and NFL. In this system, the two leagues held a joint draft for college players. The "common draft" existed until 1969 as the AFL and NFL would officially merge in 1970.
The following is a list of the 47 players the Chiefs have drafted in the first round since 1967:

Notes:
- The most popular position for the Chiefs to draft in the first round is offensive line (12), followed by defensive line (10), running back (6), defensive back and receiver (5), linebacker (4), tight ends (3) and quarterback (2).
- All five defensive backs selected in the first round made at least one Pro Bowl in their careers, led by Dale Carter (No. 20 overall - 1992) and Gary Green (No. 10 overall – 1977) with four appearances each. Eric Berry (No. 5 overall – 2010) has been named to three Pro Bowls, Jim Marsalis (No. 23 overall – 1969) earned two Pro Bowl trips and Jerome Woods (No. 28 overall – 1996) had one.
- The Chiefs have selected four players from LSU in the first round of the draft, which is the most for any school. Tyson Jackson (No. 3 overall - 2009), Glenn Dorsey (No. 5 overall - 2008), Dwayne Bowe (No. 23 overall - 2007) and Harvey Williams (No. 21 overall - 1991).
- All 47 former Chiefs first-round picks have combined for 65 Pro Bowl appearances, led by tight end Tony Gonzalez (No. 13 overall – 1997) with 14.
- Of the 47 picks, 26 of them have played in at least 85 career games.
- There are six former first-round picks by the Chiefs that are still currently on the roster. Dee Ford (No. 23 overall – 2014), Eric Fisher (No. 1 overall – 2013), Dontari Poe (No. 11 overall – 2012), Eric Berry (No. 5 overall – 2010), Tamba Hali (No. 20 overall – 2006) and Derrick Johnson (No. 15 overall – 2005).
