The 2014 NFL Draft is now less than one month away, occurring May 8-10th, when the Kansas City Chiefs will officially be on the clock with the 23rd selection of the first round. Below is a look back at the players the Chiefs selected with their first-round draft choices, during the last 20 years, including stats from their rookie campaigns.
OL Eric Fisher - 2013 NFL Draft -First Round - (First overall)
Fisher joined the Chiefs as the club's first-round draft choice (first overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft. He was the first of five offensive tackles taken in last year's draft class and the first of nine offensive linemen taken in the first round. During his rookie campaign, Fisher played in 14 contests (13 starts) at right tackle.
DT Dontari Poe - 2012 NFL Draft- First Round - (11th overall)
Poe originally entered the NFL as the Chiefs first-round draft pick (11th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. During his rookie campaign, he started 16 contests at defensive tackle, totaling 38 tackles (28 solo), including three for loss, three QB pressures and four passes defensed. He started his first NFL contest for an injured DT Anthony Toribio vs. Atlanta (9/9) and recorded two tackles (one solo), including one for a loss.
WR Jonathan Baldwin - 2011 NFL Draft- First Round - (26th overall)
Baldwin originally entered the NFL as the club's first-round pick (26th overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft. During his rookie season, Baldwin played in 11 games with three starts at wide receiver. He had 21 receptions for 254 yards (12.1 avg.) with a touchdown. He was inactive in the first five contests with a thumb injury, but caught at least one pass in each of the final 11 contests. Baldwin registered his first-career reception for 14 yards in his career debut at Oakland (10/23) and also totaled career-highs with five receptions and 82 yards (16.4 avg.) with a 39-yard touchdown vs. San Diego (10/31).
SS Eric Berry - 2010 NFL Draft - First Round - (Fifth overall)
Berry started 16 games at strong safety and was named a Pro Bowl starter, becoming the first Chiefs rookie to earn a berth in that game since LB Derrick Thomas, following the '89 season. Berry finished second on the team with 126 tackles (82 solo). He also added two TFLs and led the Chiefs with four interceptions, returned for 102 yards with a TD, two sacks, 13 passes defensed, a forced fumble and six QB pressures, along with nine special teams tackles. He also returned a missed FG for 87 yards. Berry was the first Chiefs rookie to lead the team in INTs since CB Dale Carter in '92 and was third among AFC rookies and fourth among rookies in the NFL with the four INTs. A five-time NFL Rookie of the Week finalist, tying QB Sam Bradford and WR Mike Williams for the NFL lead, Berry was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for December/January, posting 39 tackles (27 solo), eight passes defensed, two INTs with one TD and five special teams tackles; he became the first member of the Chiefs to ever win the honor.
DE Tyson Jackson - 2009 NFL Draft- First Round - (Third overall)
Jackson was selected by Kansas City in the first round (third overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. He appeared in all 16 games with 14 starts at left defensive end, finishing with 31 tackles (18 solo), four QB pressures and two passes defensed. Tyson was named to the Pro Football Weekly/PFWA All-Rookie Team.
DT Glenn Dorsey - 2008 NFL Draft- First Round - (Fifth overall)
Dorsey was drafted by Kansas City in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. He started all 16 games at right defensive tackle and registered 50 tackles (41 solo) one sack, one pass defensed and a forced fumble. He recorded his first NFL sack against Chargers QB Philip Rivers at San Diego (11/9).
OL Branden Albert - 2008 NFL Draft- First Round - (15th overall)
Albert started 15 games at left tackle and was inactive for one contest, during his rookie season. He started his first-career game at left tackle at New England (9/7).
WR Dwayne Bowe - 2007 NFL Draft - First Round - (23rd overall)
During his rookie season, Bowe played in 16 games (15 starts) and finished second on the team with 70 catches for 995 yards (14.2 avg.) and five TDs. He earned the club's Mack Lee Hill Award winner, an honor bestowed on Kansas City's top rookie or first-year player and was also selected to the Pro Football Weekly All-Rookie Team. His 70 receptions, 995 receiving yards and five TD catches led all NFL rookies. His reception and receiving yardage totals were also the highest-seasonal totals by a rookie in Chiefs history. Bowe's five receiving TDs tied as the third-highest total by a rookie in Chiefs history. The former LSU star became the first Chiefs rookie WR since the AFL-NFL merger to catch a TD pass in his first three NFL starts. He set a Chiefs rookie record with 164 receiving yards, breaking the previous mark of 130 yards set by RB/S Johnny Robinson vs. Buffalo (12/18/60). Bowe caught nine passes for 105 yards vs. Denver (11/11), joining Robinson ('60) and WR Sylvester Morris (2000) as the only rookies in franchise history to post a pair of 100-yard receiving games. Also during his rookie campaign, Bowe caught his 56th pass of the season to pass RB Abner Haynes (55) for the best mark by a rookie in Chiefs history and later ended the year with 821 receiving yards, surpassing E Chris Burford (789) for the highest single-season rookie total in Chiefs history.
DE Tamba Hali - 2006 NFL Draft - First Round - (20th overall)
During his rookie year, Hali started 16 games at left defensive end, totaling 65 tackles (55 solo), one tackle for loss, four QB pressures, an INT, three passes defensed, six forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He recorded a team-high eight sacks and was named the club's Mack Lee Hill Award winner, after becoming the first rookie DE in Chiefs history to start every game since DEs Art Still and Sylvester Hicks both accomplished the feat in '78. Hali's six forced fumbles were the most by a rookie in Chiefs history and tied for the third-highest single-season total in Chiefs history. Also during his rookie campaign, Hali started in the team's AFC Wild Card Game at Indianapolis (1/6/09) and recorded five tackles (four solo).
LB Derrick Johnson - 2005 NFL Draft - First Round - (15th overall)
Johnson started all 16 games at left outside linebacker to become the first rookie linebacker in Chiefs history to start all 16 games since LB Dino Hackett accomplished the feat in '86. Johnson later earned the club's Mack Lee Hill Award winner and ranked third on the squad with 110 tackles (87 solo), with four tackles for loss, two sacks, 10 QB pressures, one fumble recovery, two forced fumbles and nine passes defensed. Johnson recorded six special teams tackles and his 110 tackles were the fourth-highest total ever accumulated by a Chiefs rookie and were the most by a Kansas City rookie linebacker in team history since Hackett had 140 stops in '86.
2004 NFL Draft
The Chiefs traded their first-round pick (30th-overall) to Detroit for the Lions second-round pick (Junior Siavii), fourth-round pick (Samie Parker) and fifth-round pick (Alphonso Hodge) in 2005.
RB Larry Johnson - 2003 NFL Draft - First Round - (27th overall)
Johnson played in six games, during his rookie season, carrying the ball 20 times for 85 yards, scoring one TD. He also finished with one reception for two yards in 2003.
DT Ryan Sims - 2002 NFL Draft - First Round - (Sixth overall)
Sims played in six games (two starts) in 2002 and finished with five tackles, one assist and one pass breakup.
2001 NFL Draft
The Chiefs traded their 12th-overall pick to the St. Louis Rams for QB Trent Green, who in 2001 started all 16 games, completing 296 passes for 3,783 yards and 17 TDs.
WR Sylvester Morris - 2000 NFL Draft - First Round - (21st overall)
During his rookie season, Morris played in 15 games (14 starts) and totaled 48 receptions for 678 yards (14.1 avg) and three TDs, as well as one pass attempt for one completion, covering 31 yards.
T John Tait - 1999 NFL Draft - First Round - (14th overall)
Tait played in 12 games in 1999, including three starts.
T Victory Riley - 1998 NFL Draft - First Round - (27th overall)
Riley played in 16 games in 1998, including 15 starts and also recorded one fumble recovery.
TE Tony Gonzalez - 1997 NFL Draft - First Round - (13th overall)
Gonzalez played in 16 games, during his rookie campaign, and recorded 33 receptions for 368 yards (11.2 avg) and two TDs, while also recovering one fumble.
S Jerome Woods - 1996 NFL Draft - First Round - (28th overall)
Woods played in 16 games in 1996 and finished with five tackles, one assist, two PBUs and one fumble recovery, and also recorded 25 kickoff returns for 581 yards (23.2 avg) and one fumble recovery.
T Trezelle Jenkins - 1995 NFL Draft - First Round - (31st overall)
Jenkins played in one game, during his rookie season.
RB Greg Hill - 1994 NFL DRAFT - First Round - (25th overall)
Hill played in 16 games, (one start) in 1994, finishing with 141 carries for 574 yards, one TD and 16 receptions for 92 yards. During the postseason of his rookie year, he carried the ball twice for 14 yards and caught one pass for 11 yards.
1993 NFL Draft
The Chiefs traded their top pick for San Francisco 49ers QB Joe Montana, who started 11 games for the Chiefs in the '93 regular season, completing 181 passes for 2,144 yards and 13 TDs. He started three playoff games that year, completing 59 passes for 700 yards and four TDs.
