The deadline for franchise tags to be used by teams has come and gone, leading up to March 12, when free agency begins. Sean Smith is a player, who "could be asking to be paid in the playmaker range," according to the SunSentinel.com's Chris Perkins. Regardless of what Smith asks for and/or which secondary he's playing for in 2013, here's a look at some of his strengths and weaknesses.
Career Stat Line: 63 games (56 starts), 180 tackles, 31 assists, five INTs, 56 yards, 39 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery
STRENGTHS:
Size Matters
Being 6-foot-3, 218-pounds is never a bad thing, especially at the corner position. Smith's big, physical build allows him to jam and frustrate opposing receivers at the line of scrimmage.
Durability
Smith has missed just one game in his four-year career.
In 2012, he had two interceptions, 12 pass deflections, as well as two forced fumbles.
WEAKNESSESS:
Missed Guesses
Former Dolphins WRs told the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero that Smith "guesses a lot and a lot of time he guesses wrong."
Smith gave up more combined first downs and touchdowns than any other NFL CB (46).
Inconsistency
Smith's performances varied from lockdown-corner good, not allowing a single catch against the Jets in Week 3, to allowing 72 yards and a score against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 12, according to ProFootballFocus.com.
FINAL TAKE:
Cornerbacks are invaluable to a franchise, especially those who can "lock down" a certain side of the field. While Smith hasn't proven consistently to be that kind of a DB, being just 25-years-old, he has time to refine the rough spots in his game and become a solid, consistent corner.
