The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the recipients of the Missouri and Kansas High School Coach of the Week awards for week three. Greg Jones from Kearney High School in Kearney, Missouri, and Rod Stallbaumer from Basehor-Linwood High School in Basehor, Kansas, each received this honor after a strong performance by their respective teams this past week.
Kearney is now a perfect 5-0 after a 30-0 shutout of Liberty North. Kearney is ranked No. 1 in Class 4 and currently boasts a 17-game win streak since last year. Jones said this award isn't just for him.
"In my opinion it is the Staff of the week," Jones said. "I'm blessed to have great coaches and great kids that work hard for each other."
Basehor-Linwood is off to an impressive 3-0 start to the season. The Bobcats have outscored their opponents 189-18 in that stretch.
"The Chiefs Coach of the Week is a great honor to our program. I'm very blessed to have a great staff of coaches here at Basehor-Linwood who work extremely hard," Stallbaumer said. "I think that an award like this is more about recognizing our entire staff and players for their efforts. Our kids have sacrificed a lot to do the things that we ask them and without their efforts we don't have the kind of success it takes to be awarded things like this so it is a testament to our players' hard work as well."
As a result of the award, both schools will receive a $500 grant. Additionally, both coaches will be presented with congratulatory footballs autographed by Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid and a certificate recognizing their selection. Each recipient is now a finalist for their state's Chiefs Coach of the Year Award.
The 2016 High School Coach of the Week program is a joint initiative of the Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League. This program is designed to recognize and reward Kansas City area high school coaches for superior performance on a weekly basis. The Chiefs Coach of the Week program is intended to honor individuals who are shaping today's youth and tomorrow's leaders.
A member of the Chiefs Community Caring Team will visit the winners this week for a special presentation to honor them at their respective schools. Each state's winner is selected in collaboration with PrepsKC. For more information on this week's winners and the Chiefs Coach of the Week program, visit www.chiefs.com or www.prepskc.com.
