The Kansas City Chiefs made another addition to their offense on Saturday by selecting running back Brashard Smith with the No. 228 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Here's more on the newest member of the offense.
1. Smith compiled a monster season in 2024.
The 5-foot-10, 194-pound Smith rushed for 1,332 yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging 5.67 yards-per-carry in 2024. He also tallied 39 catches for 327 yards and four scores, and when combined with his kick return yardage, Smith's 1,977 all-purpose yards ranked fourth in the FBS. Only Ashton Jeanty, Cam Skattebo and Omarion Hampton recorded more.
He was one of just eight players in the FBS to average more than 140 all-purpose yards-per-game in 2024, and he was the only player in the FBS last year to record at least 1,300 rushing yards, 300 receiving yards and 300 kick-return yards. The man did a little bit of everything.
2. He has big-time special teams' experience.
In addition to his exploits as an offensive playmaker, Smith also has extensive experience on special teams. He averaged 24.4 yards-per-return on kickoff duties during his college career, which included a 98-yard touchdown in 2023.
3. He ran the third-fastest 40-yard dash of any running back at the Combine.
Smith tallied a 4.39 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this year, which trailed only Bhayshul Tuten and Jaydon Blue among all running backs at the event.
He showed off that speed on a regular basis last season, too. His 19 plays of 20+ yards ranked in the top five among all FBS running backs.
4. Smith began his career as a wide receiver and only recently made the switch to running back.
A wide receiver through the first three years of his collegiate career, Smith moved to running back ahead of the 2024 season upon the advice of SMU Head Coach Rhett Lashlee, and as it turns out, the impetus for the move was an effort to emulate Chiefs' tailback Isiah Pacheco.
Here's more from ESPN:
"It just so happened we're watching the [Kansas City] Chiefs play and Isiah Pacheco was playing great. I remember texting Coop during the game and being like, 'Hey, how much does Brashard weigh?' He hit me back and it was like 10 pounds less than Pacheco."
He might just be a player at running back, Lashlee thought, and Cooper agreed. They called Smith and said if you want to come play a new position and be a kick returner, they were in. Smith was too."
The move worked out tremendously well, and in a twist of fate, Smith is now teammates with the player who inspired his shift to running back.

5. He spent the first three seasons of his career at Miami before transferring to SMU ahead of last year.
Smith arrived at Miami as a four-star recruit in 2021 and went on to play three years there, earning All-ACC honors in 2023 as a kick returner.
His decision to transfer to SMU (and subsequently change positions) turned out to be a good one, and now all these years later, he's headed to Kansas City as the final member of the Chiefs' 2025 draft class.
