On Monday, July 27, the Kansas City Chiefs announced that for the first time in the 24-year history of the event, the tradition of Red Friday will become Red Thursday on September 17, in conjunction with the team's 2015 home opener against the Denver Broncos on CBS's Thursday Night Football.
In an additional effort to expand the excitement of Red Thursday throughout the Chiefs Kingdom in 2015, the club announced today that it will take the Red Thursday celebration on the road to Omaha, Nebraska. This marks the first time the team will specifically target fans from another market within the Kingdom during the annual season kickoff.
"We are thrilled to be taking the excitement and tradition of our Red Thursday celebration to Omaha this year," Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. "We have outstanding partners in Coca-Cola and Hy-Vee, as well as the cooperation of the Mayor and City of Omaha who are helping activate and expand this program."
Thanks to Coca-Cola, Hy-Vee, the City of Omaha and the Chiefs Red Coaters, a number of events are planned for the week of Red Thursday. On Monday, September 14, Donovan will join Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert for a Red Thursday – Omaha Mayoral Proclamation and press conference kicking off the week-long celebration leading up to the first home game of the season. In addition, a special celebration honoring former University of Nebraska and Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Will Shields' induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will take place on Wednesday afternoon/evening, serving as the marquee event before flag sales kick off on Red Thursday morning.
In alignment with the Red Thursday celebration in Kansas City, "This is Chiefs Kingdom" flags will be sold on Thursday morning at more than 30 locations, including Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area Hy-Vee stores, Hy-Vee Gas locations and City of Omaha Community Centers. A minimum donation of $5 is encouraged for fans wishing to obtain the official 2015 edition "This is Chiefs Kingdom" flag. Net proceeds from the sale of those flags will benefit the Omaha Parks Foundation.
"We are grateful to the Kansas City Chiefs and Coca-Cola for supporting the Omaha Parks Foundation," Stothert said. "The money raised from flag sales will help renovate the baseball field at Miller Park to honor Officer Kerrie Orozco and her passion for youth athletics."
Additional information, including a map of sale locations, will be available in the coming weeks on www.chiefs.com/redthursday. The Omaha Parks Foundation is a 501(3) non-profit organizations that was established in 2010. The non-profit recognizes the financial challenges of the Parks & Recreation Department, and presents an opportunity to gain support for special park projects big and small that cannot be addressed by the city budget. The Foundation enables public-private partnerships, while impacting the community in positive ways by providing destinations that encourage wellness and a healthy lifestyle.
