Chiefs Sign CB Anthony Witherstone and TE Izaiah Gathings

Kansas City also placed defensive back Nazeeh Johnson and linebacker Isaiah Moore on Injured Reserve

The Kansas City Chiefs made a handful of roster moves on Sunday, placing defensive back Nazeeh Johnson (knee) and linebacker Isaiah Moore (knee) on Injured Reserve while signing free agent cornerback Anthony Witherstone and tight end Izaiah Gathings.

Johnson tore his ACL during Saturday's practice, according to Head Coach Andy Reid. Moore missed the last four practices due to knee inflammation and will require surgery, per Reid. Because they were placed on Injured Reserve prior to the regular season, both Johnson and Moore will miss the entirety of the 2023 campaign.

The moves meant that Kansas City had two spots to fill on the 91-man roster, opening the door for Witherstone and Gathings to join the team. Witherstone – who originally signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Merrimack in May – is back with the Chiefs after being waived on June 20.

The six-foot-tall, 189-pound Witherstone was primarily an outside cornerback for Merrimack and turned in strong campaigns in each of the last two seasons, surrendering a passer rating of 76.0 or lower in both. He broke up six passes and tallied two pick-sixes in 2021 before recording four passes defensed and one interception as a senior.

Gathings – a rookie from Middle Tennessee State – joins Kansas City after spending the last few months with the New York Jets. The 6-foot-4, 222-pound Gathings, who caught 60 passes for 559 yards and two touchdowns at Middle Tennessee State last season, signed with the Jets following a successful tryout at their rookie minicamp. New York waived Gathings on July 21.

Both Witherstone and Gathings were present for practice on Sunday.
