Five Observations from Tuesday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/15

Here are some quick notes from Tuesday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the seventeenth practice of training camp on Tuesday morning as the defending Super Bowl champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Tuesday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports can be accessed below.

1. The Chiefs were back in pads on Tuesday.

The players took the field for the ninth padded practice of training camp on Tuesday, beginning the final – and perhaps the toughest – stretch of practices in St. Joseph. Not only was Tuesday's session the seventeenth overall practice of camp, but the fact that it took place following the preseason opener on Sunday presented its own set of physical and mental challenges. It's for those reasons that, in many ways, these few days can be significant in the evaluation process as the players – particularly those fighting for a roster spot – attempt to remain sharp after experiencing a game day.

In terms of specific areas of study, the Chiefs utilized their 11-on-11 periods to work on red zone situations and driving the length of the field.

2. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes made an incredible throw during 11-on-11 drills.

Mahomes put on a show for the fans in attendance on Tuesday, firing numerous passes from various arm angles throughout the practice. His performance included a sidearm touchdown pass to tight end Blake Bell during 11-on-11 red zone drills and an excellent throw later in the period to wide receiver Rashee Rice, who hauled in the pass for a physical touchdown grab.

His best work, however, took place during the "long drive drill" later in the session. On this play, Mahomes scrambled to his right and toward the sideline before launching a pass across his body to the complete other side of the field into the arms of wide receiver Skyy Moore, who went up to make a tremendous catch. It was an outrageously impressive throw that Mahomes made look easy.

3. Rookie cornerback Ekow Boye-Doe had a strong practice.

Boye-Doe, who logged significant snaps during Sunday's game against New Orleans, was responsible for back-to-back pass-breakups during the 11-on-11 red zone portion of Tuesday's practice. Boye-Doe – an undrafted free agent who made the team on a tryout basis earlier this offseason – continues to be one of the more interesting stories of the summer.

Fellow rookie defensive back Anthony Cook also made an impressive play on Tuesday, picking off a pass in the end zone during 11-on-11 drills.

4. The Chiefs made some roster moves on Tuesday.

Kansas City signed two players on Tuesday, adding linebacker Olakunle Fatukasi and cornerback Duron Lowe to the active roster.

The 24-year-old Fatukasi appeared in 13 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, playing almost exclusively on special teams. He also spent time on the Denver Broncos' practice squad last year before joining the New England Patriots during the offseason.

Lowe – who grew up in Overland Park and attended nearby St. Thomas Aquinas High School – is still seeking his first regular-season action as a professional. The Liberty University alum originally signed with the Los Angeles Rams last offseason as an undrafted free agent but was waived prior to the campaign.

In a pair of corresponding moves, the Chiefs waived cornerback Anthony Witherstone (toe sprain) with an injury designation and placed tight end Jody Fortson (shoulder) on Injured Reserve, effectively ending his season.

5. Here's a look at Tuesday's injury report.

The players who did not participate in Tuesday's practice due to injury were safety Mike Edwards (ankle), cornerback Nic Jones (fractured fingers), wide receiver Kadarius Toney (knee) and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed (knee).

Additionally, wide receivers Nikko Remigio (dislocated shoulder), Ihmir Smith-Marsette (groin) and Justyn Ross (knee/hamstring) left Tuesday's practice early.

In regard to Ross, Head Coach Andy Reid added that the injury "was something down [on his left leg]" and they'll just see how he is moving forward.

The Chiefs will take the field for the eighteenth practice of training camp on Wednesday morning. For a look at the training camp schedule or for more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
