The Kansas City Chiefs fell to the Los Angeles Rams, 54-51, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Monday night, coming up just short in a thrilling bout between two of the NFL's best teams.
In the final minutes of the third-highest scoring game in NFL history, Rams' quarterback Jared Goff found tight end Gerald Everett for a 40-yard touchdown to push Los Angeles in front. The touchdown represented the sixth and final lead change of the game, and the fourth in the final quarter alone.
Kansas City had a chance to answer with just under a minute left, but Rams' safety Lamarcus Joyner picked off Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the game came to an end.
Mahomes completed 33-of-46 passes for a career-high 478 yards and six touchdowns in the game, tossing six scores for the second time this season. Mahomes' 3,628 passing yards on the campaign are the most through Week 11 in NFL history, and his 37 touchdowns rank second to only Tom Brady's 38 in 2007.
The 23-year-old Mahomes found wide receiver Tyreek Hill for a pair of those scores, hitting the fleet-footed Hill for a 25-yard touchdown to begin the scoring for Kansas City and again on a 73-yard throw early in the fourth quarter.
The latter score was Hill's 15th touchdown of 50 or more yards since entering the league just three years ago, and it helped ignite Kansas City's second double-digit comeback of the night.
Kansas City climbed out of an early 13-point hole in the first half and, six minutes into the fourth quarter, reclaimed the lead after trailing by 10 entering the contest's final period as defensive end Allen Bailey scooped up a fumble and barreled into the end zone.
The two teams went on to trade the lead twice more before Goff found Everett for the game's final touchdown.
The game was the highest-scoring affair in Monday Night Football history as Hill, tight end Travis Kelce and tailback Kareem Hunt each amassed triple-digit scrimmage yards on the evening.
Hill now has over 1,000 yards receiving on the season, and his 215 yards through the air on Monday were the second-most in a single game in franchise history.
Kansas City will head into the bye week before taking on the Oakland Raiders on Dec. 2.
