Chiefs Announce Coaches of the Week for Second Week of the Season

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced their Coach of the Week honors for the second week of the 2018 season. The awards go to North Kansas City coach Leon Douglas and Shawnee Mission Northwest coach Bo Black.

As a result of this honor, both schools will receive a $500 player health and safety grant from the Hunt Family Foundation. Each school will also receive a Gatorade Sideline Kit, including coolers, bottles and Gatorade products. Additionally, both coaches will be presented congratulatory footballs autographed by Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid and a certificate recognizing their selection.

Both coaches are now qualified for the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award, which will be voted on later this fall. The Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award is selected by a panel comprised of the Missouri and Kansas Boards from the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association. One coach will be selected from the pool of weekly winners and will be honored at the 2019 Pro Bowl as the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year.

North Kansas City is off to its best start in years. The Hornets are 4-0 and earned the fourth win with a thrilling 19-18 win over powerhouse Fort Osage. Douglas said this award represents the work his team has put in this season.

"We are blessed to receive such a wonderful honor from the Kansas City Chiefs," Douglas said. "This award is a reflection of the commitment and investment our student-athletes and coaches have made to represent the North Kansas City High School football program."

Shawnee Mission Northwest is off to a 3-0 start for the first time in more than a decade. The Cougars earned their third win with a thrilling 27-21 overtime win at previously undefeated Olathe South. Black said the honor is all about the work of his team and fellow coaches.

"On behalf of our football team, coaching staff and student body, I am honored to be named the Chiefs Coach of the Week," Black said. "Our victory last week and our start to the season has truly been a team effort with great support from our school and fans."

In its 22nd season, the 2018 High School Coach of the Week Fueled by Gatorade is a joint initiative of the Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League. This program is designed to recognize and reward Kansas City area high school coaches for superior performance on a weekly basis while honoring individuals who are shaping today's youth and tomorrow's leaders.
