A Look Back at Every Third-Round Draft Pick in Chiefs History

The 2023 NFL Draft is inching closer by the day

A system called the "common draft" was implemented for the AFL and NFL in 1967, creating a joint draft between the two leagues while establishing the precursor for what has become the marquee event of the offseason.

The two leagues merged in 1970, and the rest is history.

In the weeks leading up to the 2023 NFL Draft, we've been taking a look back at who the Kansas City Chiefs have selected in each round since the event's beginnings 56 years ago. Here's what we've covered so far:

Notes:

- Fifty-seven of Kansas City's 61 third-round picks since 1967 have gone on to suit up for the Chiefs, playing in a combined 3,636 total contests.

- The Chiefs selected linebacker Leo Chenal in the third round (No. 103 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. Chenal appeared in all 17 games for the Chiefs last season.

- Kansas City took All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce in the third round (No. 63 overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. Kelce – who ranks second in the NFL in both receptions (675) and receiving yards (8,607) since 2016 – is the only tight end in NFL history to post seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. In fact, no other tight end in league history has even topped four total 1,000-yard seasons.

- The Chiefs have found a tremendous amount of success in the third round over the years, selecting Travis Kelce (2013), linebacker Justin Houston (2011), the franchise's all-time leading rusher in Jamaal Charles (2008), two-time Pro Bowl punter Dustin Colquitt (2005), Hall of Fame offensive guard Will Shields (1993), two-time All-Pro defensive back Albert Lewis (1983) and linebacker Gary Spani (1978) - who has the second-most tackles in team history - to name a few.

- In all, Kansas City's third-round picks have tallied 40 Pro Bowl selections. Shields is responsible for 12 of those nominations – the most of any third-round pick in the NFL since 1967.

- Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, who the Chiefs selected with the No. 75 overall pick in 2018, has started 69 games for Kansas City over the last five seasons.

- Thirteen of Kansas City's third-round picks since 1967 went on to play in at least 100 games for the Chiefs: punter Dustin Colquitt (238), offensive guard Will Shields (224), wide receiver Henry Marshall (165), defensive back Albert Lewis (150), defensive back Lloyd Burruss (145), tight end Travis Kelce (144), linebacker Gary Spani (124), defensive tackle John Browning (121), defensive back Greg Wesley (118), tailback Jamaal Charles (103), defensive end Leonard Griffin (103), linebacker Justin Houston (102), defensive tackle Allen Bailey (102) and defensive back Gary Barbaro (101).

- Additionally, punter Dustin Colquitt (238) and offensive guard Will Shields (224) own the top two spots in terms of games played in franchise history.
