A system called the "common draft" was implemented for the AFL and NFL in 1967, creating a joint draft between the two leagues while establishing the precursor for what has become the marquee event of the offseason.
The two leagues merged in 1970, and the rest is history.

- Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is off to the greatest start for any quarterback in NFL history by several statistical measures. Through 80 career starts, Mahomes has the most passing touchdowns (192) and passing yards (24,241) in league history. Additionally, Mahomes has never finished shy of the AFC Championship Game in his five years as a starting quarterback, leading Kansas City to three conference titles and two Super Bowl championships.
- The Chiefs selected cornerback Trent McDuffie with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. McDuffie appeared in 11 games for Kansas City last season, earning the third-best Pro Football Focus grade among all rookie corners.
- Kansas City acquired defensive end George Karlaftis with the No. 30 overall selection in last year's draft. Karlaftis appeared in all 17 games for the Chiefs, tallying the third-most sacks (6.0) among all rookies.
- The Chiefs have a knack for drafting prolific pass rushers in the first round, as Derrick Thomas (126.5), Tamba Hali (89.5), Neil Smith (85.5) and Art Still (73.0) are four of the top five sack artists in franchise history. Thomas was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
- Tony Gonzalez, who has the most career catches (1,325) and receiving yards (15,127) by a tight end in NFL history, was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019. Kansas City selected Gonzalez in the first round (No. 13 overall) of the 1997 Draft.
- Linebacker Derrick Johnson owns the franchise mark for the most tackles (1,262) in team history. The Chiefs selected Johnson with the No. 15 overall pick of the 2005 Draft.
