It was truly a day to remember at One Arrowhead Drive.

A lot of great things happened today, each of them improving the Kansas City Chiefs.

Every new league year brings excitement, especially as free agency offers a fresh opportunity for teams to upgrade their talent from the previous season, where applicable.

At breakfast this morning, I spoke briefly with Chiefs GM John Dorsey and TE coach Tom Melvin, as both fueled up for what would be another productive day. The continual amount of tireless work put in by the staff seemed to manifest today, as new pieces to the 2013 Chiefs puzzle were put into place.

The most popular moment of the day, likely couldn't come soon enough for new Chiefs QB Alex Smith, who was introduced during this afternoon's press conference. Smith endured a very-trying situation last season, but endured like the professional that he is, which helped land him a chair right between his new general manager and head coach.

I need only one word to describe Alex Smith's approach to his new transition as the Chiefs QB, prepared.

"I'm ready for this," Smith said, addressing the media today. "I feel like because of what I've gone through, you grow as a player, you grow as a person. I'm ready for this. This is a new opportunity for me. I can't say how excited I am for it. I'm thankful for the opportunity and I'm here to get to work and make the most of it."

Along with Alex Smith, the Chiefs announced other new additions to the team, including CB Dunta Robinson, QB Chase Daniel, DE Mike DeVito, TE Anthony Fasano, WR Donnie Avery and OL Bryan Mattison.

Among the many interviews our new Chiefs players provided today, here are some of the quotes that truly stood out.

TE Anthony Fasano on finding a good fit in KC:

"Well, two things," Fasano said. "I think the offense is very friendly for a tight end. I wanted to be a part of changing this story around. I think we have, so far, the right pieces and probably more pieces to come. I trust that they will be the right pieces and I am looking forward to it."

QB Chase Daniel commenting on his new team, including QB Alex Smith:

"He can sling it," Daniel said of Smith. "He is as athletic as any quarterback in this league, in my opinion. Not only him, but I am excited to work with (Chiefs offensive coordinator) Doug Pederson, (Chiefs QB coach) coach (Matt) Nagy, coach Reid, I mean all of those guys in the offensive room and the quarterback room. I am excited to work with all the guys we have on offense. You look at Dwayne Bowe just getting his deal done, you have the Pro Bowl running back in Anthony Sherman, you look at Branden Albert; I can go on and on with weapons that this team has and I wanted to be part of it."

WR Donnie Avery on choosing KC:

"Andy Reid," Avery said. "I am a big fan of his work. I know he likes to throw the ball from his (Eagles WR) DeSean Jackson days. He likes to get the ball deep, he likes fast guys. He called me and I said, 'I'm here'.''

DE Mike DeVito on Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton's 3-4 defense:

"I think the one thing that benefits me is that, I am versatile as far as playing up, playing the three technique and nose," DeVito said. "It helps me to have that versatility and I enjoy playing in this defense. It is a hybrid 3-4/4-3, there is a lot to it. When you get it down and understand it, you can really eliminate a lot of things and you can have a good understanding of what is going on with the offense and it helps you be a step ahead. This is a great system coming in here. I've been in it for the past four years and I am sure Bob will have his own spin to it. I think Chiefs fans and everybody will be really excited about it."

The overwhelming factor involving each of today's signings, they're backed with purpose.

The Chiefs staff saw needs and addressed them and will continue to do so.

Of the memorable discussions that I've been fortunate enough to have with John Dorsey, what he shared with me during the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine still resonates and is very applicable to today's activities.

Dorsey continues to bring the guys in for Andy Reid (and staff) to coach, ensuring they maximize their potential, providing Chiefs fans with countless reasons to cheer.

As the day was wrapping up, except of course for Dorsey and company, who proceeded to return to the office, leaving no stone unturned.

Our new GM admitted that he feels better today, about the team roster, than he did when he first arrived.

I agree and can't wait to see what's next.
