The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Chicago Bears, 41-10, in dominant fashion on Sunday afternoon.
Here are some quick notes from the victory.
1. Coach Reid continued to cement his place in NFL history.
Sunday's victory marked the 271st career victory (including the playoffs) for Head Coach Andy Reid, moving him past Tom Landry for sole possession of fourth place on the all-time wins list. Only Don Shula (347 wins), Bill Belichick (330) and George Halas (324) have more wins in league history than Coach Reid.
2. The Chiefs' defense didn't allow a single point until early in the fourth quarter.
Kansas City has now allowed just three offensive touchdowns through three games, which is a feat only the Cleveland Browns (1 touchdown allowed) and Buffalo Bills (2 touchdowns allowed) can top. The Chiefs held Chicago out of the end zone until late in the fourth quarter, ending a stretch of seven consecutive quarters in which Kansas City held opponents without a touchdown.
The Chiefs currently own the No. 4 scoring defense in the NFL.
3. Cornerback Trent McDuffie tallied his second forced fumble of the year.
McDuffie jarred the ball free from Bears' tailback Khalil Herbert late in the second quarter, marking his second forced fumble of the year. Linebacker Willie Gay pounced on the football, completing the takeaway. The former first-round pick is currently tied with five other players for the league-lead in that category.
McDuffie is off to an outstanding start this season through three games, earning Pro Football Focus' top coverage grade among all cornerbacks with 75+ coverage snaps this season. The second-year defensive back has yielded an opponent passer rating of just 73.9 when targeted, and he has yet to allow a touchdown.
4. The Chiefs racked up 34 first-half points on Sunday.
Kansas City was surgical on offense in Sunday's victory, piling up 456 yards of total offense, 31 first downs and 41 total points. In fact, the Chiefs' 31 first downs marked the most for any team in a single game this season. Kansas City also came through in the clutch on numerous occasions, converting 10-of-14 third down chances while compiling a perfect 5-for-5 mark in the red zone.
The Chiefs were particularly effective in the first half, tallying 34 points – their most in a first half since Week 14 of the 2021 season – while scoring on all but one possession. Ironically enough, Kansas City punted on its first series before stringing together six consecutive scoring drives – four of which ended in touchdowns – to close out the first half.
The Chiefs found the end zone once again on their opening possession of the third quarter before Head Coach Andy Reid began to rotate several of the starters – including quarterback Patrick Mahomes – out of the game.
In total, Kansas City's 41 points marked its most since scoring 44 vs. San Francisco in Week 7 of last season. The Chiefs' 31-point margin of victory was their most since Week 14 of the 2021 season.
5. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes tallied another three-touchdown performance.
Mahomes completed 24-of-33 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns on Sunday, recording the 37th game of his career in which he threw for three or more touchdowns. Mahomes leads the NFL in that category by a whopping 10 games since 2018, and for further context, the reigning league MVP has thrown for three or more touchdowns in 45 percent of his career games.
Additionally, Mahomes made some NFL history on Sunday by becoming the fastest player ever to 25,000 passing yards, doing so in just 83 games. Mahomes broke the record, which was previously held by Los Angeles Rams' quarterback Matthew Stafford, by seven games.
6. Tailback Jerick McKinnon found the end zone twice on Sunday.
McKinnon recorded the seventh multi-touchdown game of his career on Sunday, and his fourth since the beginning of last season. Only New Orleans Saints' running back Jamaal Williams (6), Los Angeles Chargers' running back Austin Ekeler (6), Las Vegas Raiders' wide receiver Davante Adams (6), Seattle Seahawks' running back Kenneth Walker (5) and Dallas Cowboys' running back Tony Pollard (5) have more such games in that time.
Furthermore, since Week 13 of last season, McKinnon leads the NFL in receiving touchdowns (10) by three scores. The next closest players are Davante Adams (7), Miami Dolphins' wide receiver Tyreek Hill (7) and San Francisco 49ers' tight end George Kittle (7).
7. Tight end Travis Kelce hauled in his second touchdown grab of the season.
Kelce was in the end zone for the second consecutive week on Sunday with a 3-yard touchdown grab early in the third quarter. The All-Pro tight end also recorded a team-leading 69 receiving yards in the game, marking his 81st career outing with at least 60 yards through the air. Kelce leads the NFL in that category (by four games) since 2015.
8. Safety Mike Edwards hauled in his first interception of the season.
Edwards – who recorded seven interceptions from 2020-22 – tallied his first pick as a member of the Chiefs on Sunday with an interception late in the first half. The veteran safety has seen his snap count increase in each of the last two games, and he has certainly made the most of it, earning the fifth-best PFF grade among Chiefs' defenders on Sunday.
9. Defensive end George Karlaftis recorded a career-best eight pressures.
Karlaftis had an afternoon to remember on Sunday, tallying a career-most eight pressures. The second-year defensive end now has 16 pressures on the season, which ranks sixth in the NFL and trails only the Detroit Lions' Aidan Hutchinson (19), the Las Vegas Raiders' Maxx Crosby (19), the Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt (19), the Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett (18) and the Dallas Cowboys' Micah Parsons (17).
In terms of traditional stats, Karlaftis has 2.5 sacks and three quarterback hits through three games.
10. Defensive end Mike Danna already has 2.5 sacks on the season.
Danna is off to a strong start this season, too, as he is already halfway to his career-high in sacks (5 in 2022) through just three games. Danna recorded five total pressures (and one sack) on Sunday, trailing only George Karlaftis among Chiefs' defenders in that category.
The Chiefs will now look to make it three wins in a row next week as Kansas City prepares to take on the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on Sunday Night Football.
