The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 30-24, in an overtime thriller on Monday night.
Here are some quick notes about the victory.
1. The Chiefs are 8-0 to begin the season for the third time in franchise history.
Kansas City remains undefeated heading into its ninth game of the season for the third time in franchise history (2003 and 2013). Four of the Chiefs' eight victories took place over teams that are currently .500 or better, and for what it's worth, the Buccaneers entered Monday's game with a .500 record (4-4) before falling to Kansas City.
Remarkably, this is the fifth time the Chiefs have recorded a single-season winning streak of at least eight games under Head Coach Andy Reid.
2. Kansas City has now won 14 consecutive games dating back to last season.
The Chiefs have not lost since falling to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 16 of last season, tallying 14 straight wins in that time (including the playoffs). It's the longest winning streak in franchise history, and the longest for any team since the 2015 Carolina Panthers won 14 straight games to open that season.
The streak is tied for the 12th longest in NFL history, and currently stands seven wins behind the 2003-2004 New England Patriots for the league record (21 straight).
3. The Chiefs won the coin toss in overtime and didn't waste the opportunity.
Tailback Kareem Hunt powered ahead for a 2-yard touchdown to complete a 10-play, 70-yard series that won the game in overtime on Monday night. Hunt accounted for 27 yards on the series (16 rushing, 11 receiving) while tight end Travis Kelce (3 catches for 26 yards) and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (1 catch for 15 yards) also contributed with big plays.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was 5-for-5 on the drive for 52 yards.
4. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had a home debut to remember.
Hopkins was sensational on Monday, catching eight passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Both of his scoring grabs took place on third down, and for the game, five of Hopkins eight receptions picked up a first down.
Three of those five first-down grabs took place on third down, with the result being two touchdown grabs and an incredible 35-yard reception amidst triple coverage that moved the chains on 3rd-and-8 late in the first half.
The play, which eventually led to Hopkins' first touchdown grab of the game a little bit later, had a 12.3 percent chance of being completed according to Next Gen Stats.
Hopkins is the first member of the Chiefs to tally multiple receiving touchdowns in a game this season.
5. Tight end Travis Kelce hauled in a career-most 14 receptions on Monday night.
Kelce was also excellent on Monday, tallying a career-most 14 catches for exactly 100 yards. Six of those grabs picked up a first down, matching the Raiders' Jakobi Meyers for the most first-down receptions of any player in Week 9. He made some history, too, passing Antonio Gates (955) for the third-most receptions by a tight end in NFL history (959). Only Tony Gonzalez (1,325) and Jason Witten (1,228) recorded more.
Together, the duo of Kelce and Hopkins combined to catch 22 passes for 186 yards, 11 first downs and two touchdowns.
6. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes tallied the 39th game of his career with at least three touchdown passes.
Mahomes completed 34-of-44 passes for 291 yards and three scores on Monday, marking his 39th career regular-season game with at least three passing touchdowns. That tally leads the NFL since 2018, and the next closest player (Kirk Cousins) is 10 touchdowns shy of Kansas City's All-Pro quarterback.
Mahomes also improved to 6-0 in overtime games with Monday's victory.
7. Tailback Kareem Hunt recorded his second 100-yard game of the season.
Hunt rushed for 106 yards on 27 carries on Monday, forcing three missed tackles while racking up 64 yards after first contact. The 29-year-old Hunt has now handled at least 20 carries in four consecutive games, rushing for 345 yards in that time.
8. The Chiefs' defense held a 29th consecutive opponent under 28 total points.
Kansas City held Tampa Bay to just 24 points on Monday, marking the 29th straight opponent the Chiefs held under 28 total points. The streak is tied with the 2005-07 Baltimore Ravens for the longest in 17 seasons.
9. Kansas City has been excellent on third down and in the red zone lately.
Since Week 7, the Chiefs are 32-of-48 on third down (a league-best 67%) and 11-for-13 in terms of red zone touchdown efficiency (85%). Kansas City's proficiency in those two areas has led to an average of 28.3 points-per-game over the last three weeks, which ranks sixth in the NFL.
Patrick Mahomes, specifically, when facing third down on Monday completed 11-of-13 passing attempts for 126 yards, three touchdowns and 10 first downs.
10. The Chiefs have now won eight straight games in which they trailed at some point in the second half.
Kansas City rallied to score 14 unanswered points after falling behind by a touchdown late in the third quarter, and while things got interesting at the end, the Chiefs held on to record their eighth-straight win in games that they trailed at some point in the second half.
According to OptaStats, the streak is the longest for any team in NFL history.
The Chiefs will now turn the page quickly for a matchup with the Denver Broncos on deck.
