100 Year Flood, 2015
Acrylic on Panel
100 Year Flood interprets a scene outside of Parkville, MO during the Missouri River flood of 2011. The monochromatic nature of this image creates the sense that the entire landscape is under water. Floods of this magnitude frequently devastate agricultural communities. Floods are one of nature's most violent and destructive events. But the waters eventually recede, leaving behind a surprising gift: thick layers of nutrient-rich soil. Destruction creates the conditions for wild growth.
This contradiction echoes in the horror and beauty of the flooded farmstead in this painting. Midwesterners have historically relied on agriculture for their livelihoods and understand the powerful natural cycles that shape the landscape.
Goering resides in Fairway, Kansas.
