The Kansas City Chiefs employ perhaps the best trio of interior offensive linemen in the NFL, and as ESPN's latest positional rankings indicate, it's not particularly close.
Kansas City was represented by three players in the rankings, which reflected the thoughts of nearly 80 league executives, coaches and scouts who were surveyed on the top interior offensive linemen in the league.
Guard Joe Thuney checked in at No. 4 in the rankings, Creed Humphrey earned the No. 7 spot and Trey Smith landed at No. 9. The Chiefs were the only team to have multiple representatives in the top 10, let alone three.
Here's a portion of what Jeremy Fowler, the author's article, wrote about Thuney, who has earned the top Pro Football Focus pass-blocking "grade" of any guard in each of the last three seasons:
"Thuney is something of a pass-blocking wizard. He lost four out of 431 pass-block attempts for a 99.1% win rate with one sack attributed. That clip easily led the NFL."
The man to Thuney's right, Creed Humphrey, enters this upcoming season as the consensus top center in the NFL. He earned the No. 1 spot among all centers in Pro Football Focus' rankings last month before topping CBS Sports' positional rankings a few weeks later. His standing in ESPN's rankings continued that trend, as Humphrey – at No. 7 overall among interior linemen – was the first center listed.
Rounding out this group is Smith, who landed at No. 9. One of the steals of the 2021 NFL Draft, Smith has grown from humble beginnings as a sixth-round pick into one of the league's top offensive guards. The 25-year-old Smith has started 50 games over the last three seasons, logging more than 1,000 regular-season snaps in each.
Smith was PFF's No. 8 overall guard last season among players to tally 1,000+ snaps, which was up one spot from his No. 9 overall ranking the year prior, and up three spots from his No. 11 ranking in 2021.
Here's a bit more from Fowler:
"Smith's 96.6% pass block win rate ranked third among guards under consideration."
All three players are each among the best in the NFL at what they do, and as these rankings show, there isn't a better group in the league.
