Patrick Mahomes Earns No. 1 Spot in ESPN's Quarterback Rankings

Mahomes is the standard at his position

The folks at ESPN continued their positional rankings on Monday, and in perhaps the least surprising development of the series, quarterback Patrick Mahomes checked in as the No. 1 signal caller in the NFL.

The rankings reflected the thoughts of nearly 80 league executives, coaches and scouts who were surveyed as part of the project, which was then compiled by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Here's a portion of what Fowler wrote about Mahomes:

"The gatekeepers of NFL greatness have begun chiseling Mahomes' likeness onto their Mount Rushmore of quarterbacks.

Mahomes' work is so undeniable that all but one voter considered him the league's best quarterback. He's one of three players in NFL history with three Super Bowls and two MVPs, joining Tom Brady and Joe Montana, quarterbacks who needed 11 and 12 years, respectively, to reach the feat. Mahomes did it in seven, one of which (2017) was spent behind Alex Smith. During that span, Mahomes has 219 touchdown passes and 28,424 passing yards, the second most in NFL history for a passer's first seven years."

Indeed, at just 28 years old, Mahomes is already one of the greatest players in league history. His career touchdown and passing yardage marks are the most through 100 career regular-season games of any player, and he did so despite only starting 96 games so far in his career.

Additionally, a Chiefs' season under Mahomes has never ended shy of the AFC Championship Game. He's 4-2 in those contests, leading Kansas City to three championships during his tenure as the Chiefs' starter.

Mahomes is simply off to the greatest start for any player in league history, and as these rankings reflect, he remains the standard at his position.
