The Kansas City Chiefs added to their stable of running backs on Friday by signing veteran tailback Samaje Perine.
Here are five things to know about the newest member of the team.
1. Perine is a six-year veteran who spent last season with the Denver Broncos.
The 5-foot-10, 236-pound Perine has tallied 3,021 yards from scrimmage and 14 total touchdowns across 93 games in his six years as a professional, taking the field for five teams in that time.
He spent the first two years of his career with Washington, rushing for 635 yards and a touchdown in 21 games (8 starts) from 2017-18. He then split the 2019 campaign between Cincinnati and Miami before joining the Bengals again prior to the 2020 season, where he went on to log 1,490 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns from 2020-22.
Perine, who spent last season with Denver, recorded 693 yards from scrimmage (238 rushing, 455 receiving) in 17 games in 2023. He averaged 4.5 yards-per-carry.
2. He caught 88 passes over the last two seasons.
Perine has proven himself to be a capable receiver out of the backfield during his NFL career. The last two seasons, specifically, saw the 28-year-old running back tally 88 receptions for 742 yards and four touchdowns.
He caught 38 passes for 287 yards during his final year with Cincinnati in 2022, but Perine really broke out as a pass-catcher last season with 50 receptions for 455 yards. For context, that yardage total ranked seventh among all running backs last season, and his 9.1 yards-per-reception average ranked third.
3. He originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick in 2017.
Washington selected Perine with the No. 114 overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, making him the ninth running back taken that year.
Here's what NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote about Perine in his pre-draft breakdown, which made the comparison to former Falcons and Chargers running back Michael Turner:
"Perine is a physical runner who can create additional yardage through power and can be a complimentary "banger" for a team who already has a slasher…He delivers a message when he finishes runs…Not a typical third down option, but has the soft hands out of backfield to be a solid screen and check-down option."
Considering what Perine has done in the years since, it appears that Zierlein was spot on.
4. Perine's cousin, La'Mical, spent last season with the Chiefs.
If Perine's surname sounds familiar, that's because it is. His cousin, La'Mical, appeared in five games for Kansas City last year, which included a start in the Chiefs' regular-season finale against Los Angeles. Perine recorded 109 yards from scrimmage in that game, marking a career-best.
La'Mical signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in May, but now – just a few months later – Samaje is a Chief.
5. While at Oklahoma, Perine rushed for the most yards in a single game in FBS history.
Perine was a star for the Oklahoma Sooners from 2014-2016, rushing for at least 1,000 yards in each of his three seasons in Norman. He burst on the scene with 1,713 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns in 2014, quickly establishing himself as one of the top players in all of college football. In fact, Perine's 427 rushing yards on November 22 of that year remain the most in a single game in FBS history.
He went on to record a 1,000-yard season in each of the following two campaigns before heading to the NFL in 2017, and all these years later, Perine is now a member of the back-to-back defending world champions.
