SALUTE TO SERVICE

Chiefs Recognize SSG Omar Sotelo as a Tribute to the Troops Honoree Presented by Crown Royal

SSG Sotelo is currently stationed at nearby Fort Riley

They devote their lives to protecting those that they've never met, selflessly stepping forward to defend all that we hold dear in this country.

These individuals don't join the service for recognition or fame, it's just simply what they feel called to do, forgoing personal ambition to become a part of something much larger than themselves.

They're the brave few who make up our Armed Forces, and some of our nation's very best are right here in Chiefs Kingdom.

The Chiefs have a rich history of supporting our men and women in uniform throughout the years, including through the "Tribute to the Troops" program at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, which recognizes the real heroes in our community during every home game.

That initiative took place once again during the regular-season opener earlier this month, as SSG Omar Sotelo was recognized as the "Tribute to the Troops" honoree presented by Crown Royal.

Initially a heavy equipment mechanic in the Marine Corps, Sotelo originally signed up in 2015 in pursuit of a new and rewarding experience.

"I just wanted some excitement in my life, and the Marine Corps recruiter sold it to me by saying that it was going to be a challenge," Sotelo said. "That was a time in my life where I was definitely looking for something like that, and that's why I joined the Marines."

Sotelo went on to spend the next four years in the Marine Corps, but following the expiration of his contract in 2019, he set his sights on a new challenge – and a new branch – as a member of the Army.

"I just wanted a change of scenery," Sotelo said. "I was a mechanic in the Marine Corps, but I kind of wanted more of a combat-focused role. So, I became a combat engineer. We're basically experts in explosive demolition."

Sotelo has manned that role since 2020 at nearby Fort Riley, and during that time, his performance clearly caught the attention of his superiors, culminating in this month's "Tribute to the Troops" nomination.

It was quite an honor, but for Sotelo, he was far more interested in making the event about those around him rather than himself.

"My first thought was that I wanted to bring as many people with me as possible," Sotelo said. "I wanted to bring my wife and two of my soldiers, because I wouldn't be where I am now without others helping me get there along the way."

That attitude is synonymous with our nation's Armed Forces, as individuals from every walk of life come together in pursuit of something much larger than themselves. Sotelo didn't sign up in pursuit of accolades, but on opening night, the tens of thousands at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium made their appreciation for his efforts known.
