In August 2015, the Chiefs and the Hunt Family Foundation became founding sponsors of City Year Kansas City, an education-focused national nonprofit that partners with high-need public schools to provide full-time tutors and mentors to keep students in school and on track to graduate. The program places AmeriCorps members into schools full-time, where these near-peer resources provide students with tutoring and in-class support, after-school programming, as well as organize school-wide initiatives to increase academic achievement and student engagement.
The club has made annual six-figure investments to support nine full-time City Year AmeriCorps members at Central Middle School since the 2015-16 school year. These AmeriCorps members each spend at least 1,700 hours annually helping the nearly 400 students at the school.
Chiefs President Mark Donovan is personally committed to City Year Kansas City, serving 4 terms as Board Chair of City Year Kansas City, helping lead a strategic public/private campaign to increase support and exposure for City Year.
