Seven Chiefs Appear in ESPN's Positional Rankings

The Chiefs were well-represented in the annual rankings

ESPN's annual positional rankings are out, and unsurprisingly, the Kansas City Chiefs are well-represented.

Seven members of the Chiefs appeared in this year’s rankings, which were compiled by a panel of league executives, coaches and scouts.

Here's who all made the cut, plus a portion of the analysis that accompanied each player:

Quarterback: Patrick Mahomes – No. 1

"Mahomes still leads the NFL in virtually every passing category -- from passing yards to touchdowns and yards per attempt -- since becoming the starter in 2018. No quarterback was more efficient on third down than Mahomes last season. He led the NFL in third-down QBR (90.4) with a league-high 53.1% of his passing attempts resulting in first downs."

Interior Offensive Line: Creed Humphrey – No. 1

"Last year, Humphrey made the case as the best overall center since Jason Kelce. Now, he's the top interior lineman thanks to consistency in the voting. He's the only one to appear on every ballot and was a top-three recipient on the majority of them…Humphrey's 96.2 pass block win rate last season ranks sixth among all interior offensive linemen. He's the lead communicator for a championship-level offense. And his intangibles are well-known around the league."

Interior Offensive Line: Trey Smith – No. 4

"Smith's 75.1 run block win rate ranks third among this group, and he received several first-place votes because of it. As one NFL coordinator said, 'He's got elite hands, and he is great at finishing his blocks.'"

Defensive Tackle: Chris Jones – No. 2

"For many evaluators, Jones' size, strength, versatility and mismatch ability remain unrivaled. That combination has resulted in 40 sacks over the past four years, tops among defensive tackles since 2021.

'When it comes to the ability to overwhelm inside and win on third down and in the two-minute, he's still the best," an NFC scout said of Jones. "He's been the face of a championship defense for a long time and he's next to impossible to block one-on-one.'

His 19.9% pass rush win rate is tops among interior rushers, as are his 62 pass-rush wins."

Cornerback: Trent McDuffie – No. 4

"McDuffie has emerged as one of the league's most versatile corners. In 2023, he often played from the slot, disrupting opposing offenses with three sacks and five forced fumbles. In 2024, he was featured more on the outside…McDuffie aligned as a wide cornerback on a career-high 82.6% of snaps in 2024 -- his previous career high was 66.8% as a rookie in 2022. He was up to the challenge of playing outside, producing 11 pass deflections and two interceptions on 90 targets."

Linebacker: Nick Bolton – No. 4

"Bolton put together his most complete season in 2024, boasting career bests in sacks (3), pass deflections (6) and quarterback hits (7)…Since 2021, Bolton leads all linebackers (minimum 1,000 snaps) in stuffing opposing rushers at or behind the line of scrimmage on 4.7% of his run defense snaps."

Tight End: Travis Kelce – No. 5

"Kelce is still dangerous in the red zone, where he turned 26 targets into 19 catches for 106 yards and three scores. He still led the Chiefs in targets (133) last season.

'He's still awesome,' an NFC executive said of Kelce. 'It might not look as exotic as he used to, but you still look up and he's got nine for 70.'"

Additionally, defensive end George Karlaftis also made the edge-rusher rankings as an honorable mention.
