Chiefs Sign WR Jaaron Hayek Following a Successful Tryout at Rookie Minicamp

The Chiefs signed a tryout player from last weekend’s rookie minicamp on Tuesday

The Kansas City Chiefs signed wide receiver Jaaron Hayek on Tuesday following a successful tryout at rookie minicamp last weekend.

Hayek was one of 38 rookies who attended the three-day camp on a tryout basis. He was one of the standouts of the weekend from a production standpoint with multiple catches at various levels of the field, and as it turned out, his performance clearly impressed the Chiefs' coaches enough to earn a contract. In a corresponding move, the Chiefs waived rookie wide receiver Reggie Brown, who signed with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent last week.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Hayek played five seasons for Villanova from 2019 through 2023, catching 170 passes for 2,744 yards and 29 touchdowns in 48 career games. Now with a contract in-hand, he'll have an opportunity to pick up where he left off when the Chiefs begin "Organized Team Activities," or "OTAs," during the week of May 20.

In other roster news, the Chiefs waived wide receiver Shi Smith, defensive end Jordan Smith, wide receiver Jacob Copeland, tight end Izaiah Gathings and safety Tyree Gillespie in recent days. Kansas City also released veteran wide receiver Anthony Miller and withdrew its "Exclusive Rights" tender on linebacker Cole Christiansen.
